[edit] History of Nippon TV
- September 4, 1951 - Matsutaro Shoriki announced a plan to found Nippon TV.
- October 28, 1952 - Nippon Television Network Corporation was founded [1].
- August 28, 1953 - Nippon TV started to broadcast television as the first commercial television broadcast in Japan. [1]
- September 10, 1960 - Nippon TV was given right to broadcast color television [2]
- April 1, 1966 - Nippon News Network (NNN) was formed.
- October 9, 1969 - Matsutaro Shoriki, the chair of Nippon TV in those days, died.
- 1972 - Nippon Television Network System (NNS) was formed.
- 1985 - Nippon TV completed a studio in New York City.
- 1987 - Nippon Television's cable news channel, NCN, was launched. [2]
- 1993 - The mascot character of Nippon TV designed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, Inc., "Nandaro" appeared to commemorate Nippon TV's 40th Anniversary. [2]
- July, 2003 - The common name for Japan was changed (日本テレビ, NTV → 日テレ, NIPPON TELEVISION), however "NTV" is still used for overseas.
- February 29, 2004 - The headquarters of Nippon TV moved from Kojimachi to Shiodome.
NTV's television network has been plagued by scandal in recent years, most notably after it was revealed that an NTV producer paid viewers to manipulate TV ratings. NTV Chairman Seiichiro Ujiie was compelled to step down from his post at the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters of Japan, an industry-wide ethics body, in October 2003. Shortly thereafter, he resigned as Chairman. NTV subsequently came under fire for staging part of a news show.
