[edit] Introduction

This train is named after the Nilgiri ( Tamil: English - (Nil - Blue;giri - Mountain)) Mountains. The train is primarily intended for travellers to these mountains, especially to the towns of Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Mettupalayam is at the foot of these mountains, and the Nilgiri Express links to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR). The Nilgiri Passenger on the NMR is a connecting service to this train, allowing passengers to transfer on opposite platforms at the Mettupalayam interchange. Mettupalayam also has numerous road (and bus) links to various parts of the Nilgiri mountains via the Nilgiri Ghat Roads.

There is a nightly service in either direction. Train number 2671 goes from Chennai to Mettupalayam as train number 2672 is going from Mettupalayam to Chennai.
