Niles Harris

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niles Harris (born circa 1947 in Deadwood, South Dakota), a Vietnam war veteran, was the inspiration for the song "8th of November" by country music group Big & Rich.[1] The top hat, made by American Indian artist Michael McLeod, which Big Kenny often wears was given to him by Harris.

Harris fought in the 173rd Airborne Brigade during Operation Hump on November 8, 1965. This historic day started with an unexpected attack by the Vietnamese. Harris received a Purple Heart for his combat service, having received a shrapnel wound in his leg that day.
