As of 2001 India census[2], Nilanga had a population of 31,660. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Nilanga has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 57%. In Nilanga, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Majority of population of this town is involved in Agriculture and traditional retail business. Lingayat and Marwari communities have dominated this town by their influence in business. This town is native place for ex CM of Maharashtra Dr. Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar.
