Niland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California, United States. The town is located 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Salton Sea. The population was 1,143 at the 2000 census. It is part of the 'El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area'.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,143 people, 422 households, and 281 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,813.3 people per square mile (1,076.4/km²). There were 530 housing units at an average density of 1,304.5/sq mi (499.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 54.77% White, 3.15% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 4.55% Asian, 28.08% from other races, and 7.44% from two or more races. 55.29% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 422 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,592, and the median income for a family was $27,500. Males had a median income of $36,786 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,297. About 15.1% of families and 21.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.8% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Niland is located in the 40th Senate District, represented by Democrat Denise Moreno Ducheny, and in the 80th Assembly District, represented by Republican Bonnie Garcia. Federally, Niland is located in California's 51st congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +7[2] and is represented by Democrat Bob Filner.
