Nikephorus Bryennios or Nicephorus Bryennius, was a Byzantine general who tried to establish himself as Emperor in the late eleventh century.
Nicephorus first becomes important at the Battle of Manzikert. He was one of the very few generals who performed well at that battle.
In about 1077 Nicephorus was serving as dux of Durazzo. He decided the current Byzantine Emperor was ineffective and inept and revolted against the present powers. In November of 1077 his forces reached the walls of Constantinople but they were subsequently driven back into Thrace. After Nicephorus III became emperor he had Alexius Comnenos go and capture Bryennius, who was thrown in prison and had his eyes put out.
