Scout Association of Japan
Joe, I am embarassed, but I can't read Japanese (yet), and need to know who these people are, and if possible, how they relate to Japanese Scouting.
and to find how Emperor Hirohito, Viscount Makoto Saito and General Maresuke Nogi are related to Scouting through the Japanese Wikipedia.
I do so appreciate your help, Chris 02:25, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Here you go:
- Akizuki Satsuo (秋月左都夫?)
- After observing a British Boy Scout event in 1908, he reported his findings to others in Japan, paving the way for the Boy Scouts to be set up there. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
- Takehiko Kurushima (久留島武彦 Kurushima Takehiko?)
- Participated in the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark. Author of youth literature and winner of of the "Nihon no Andersen" award for his nursery rhyme "Yūyake Koyake". One of the founding pioneers of the scouting movement in Japan.
- Hiroshi Koshiba (小柴博 Koshiba Hiroshi?)
- Author of Tokyo Shonengun. Participated in a discussion in 1913 with Japan's ambassador to Russia Ichirō Motono, were Motono explained all about the Boy Scout principles and organization in Europe. Koshiba was suitably impressed and decided to follow them. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Helped reorganize the Shūyodan Yonenbu into the Nihon Kenjidan with Shimoda (below) in 1921. He died of a sudden heart attack on June 19, 1925.
- Tsuneha Sano (佐野常羽 Sano Tsuneha?)
- Attended the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark and the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in the United Kingdom. Received the Silver Wolf award from Lord Baden-Powell in 1931. The only other person to receive the Silver Wolf in Japan was the Emperor Showa. Given the title of "Elder" by the National Scouting Association of Japan in 1954. Given the highest award of the NSAJ, the "Kijishō", in 1955. He died in 1956.
- Toyomatsu Shimoda (下田豊松 Shimoda Toyomatsu?)
- Author of Hokkaido Iwanai Shonendan. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Established the Nihon Kenjidan (translates to something like "Japan Stalwart Youth Troop") in 1921. Was Japan's first "Chief Scout."
- Hōjō Tokiyuki (北条時敬?)
- Principal of Hiroshima Regular High School. After returning from attending a worldwide morality conference in 1908 where he conducted a survey of the British scouting organization, he returned to Japan and gave lectures on it in Hiroshima and other places. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
- Michiharu Mishima (三島通陽 Mishima Michiharu?)
- Held a scouting exhibition in February 1946, the first since the end of WWII. The National Boy Scout Alliance of Japan is founded in 1947, and Mishima is the first president.

Appleby's other ip
The other ip listed on his checkuser 4.23.83.100 put back a few of the changes, 1 among them (note the changing "did not take" to "take." He also is changing the names on the Korean article about Sea of Japan (again), even though this issue was settled awhile ago 2.Also, he changed the (correct) tag to one which needs to be resolved, which seems a bit odd 3.He hasn't stepped it up yet besides some incivility/POV pushing from this ip, but I'd appreciate it if you might at least be able to keep your eye on the situation for awhile. This is not a dynamic ip, it's at a healthcare organization, where he has been editing since 2004 (his first edit was to the Sea of Japan naming page). esperanza and ja-3? otaku? need help!
Hiya,
You look like exactly the person whose skills are required.... the author of otaku is feeling ganged-up on; multiple rvs to his article; once claimed racist attacks (but seems to have deleted that claim); etc etc. Esperanza ja-3 otaku, where are you? Thanks --Ling.Nut 23:54, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- The author? There are many authors of that article (including me on occasion). I'll take a looksie, though. (^_^) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:00, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- PLease insert original between the and author. A million tks.--Ling.Nut 00:03, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Hmm...from what I can see, the original author (the one who create it) is DixieFlatline, who hasn't edited since December 2001. I'm not sure exactly what you want me to do on the article, though. Please point me to some specific diffs that show the problem. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:07, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oops my bad. You are correct. I was referring to User:Hkcbgcs, who is not the orig. auth.. I wasn't asking for any help with the article (tho it needs help badly!). I was asking for help soothing his/her feelings of being attacked. He/she was making accuastions of racism on his/her talk page.. But... I dunno. Where do you draw the line? Wikipedians --esp. with a popular topic like anime -- can be pretty proactive rv'ers. Thanks. If you think it would help to say a word or two to Hkcbgcs, go ahead. If not, don't. I'm not sure where the line should be drawn when helping people who may either be having language/culture problems or who on the other hand may be too sensitive. --Ling.Nut 00:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

-
- BTW he/she was making much-toned-down accusations on my talk page, [about others, not about me] which I have deleted. --Ling.Nut 00:25, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

- Ehhh?? OK, I offically give up. I polished their English big-time, made good comments, good edits, etc. Took me more than a few minutes; maybe even a half hour or so. They rv'd *everything*. They are not serious about producing a high-quality article. I'm not gonna get into a high-school revert war. Instead, I withdraw from helping. Tks for your time. --Ling.Nut 01:07, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
Editors declaring war
Looking for your opinion:
There are two editors on the Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea page who have "declared war" on changing the name. One user said he'll "change it by any means" [here] and Wikimachine today said that since it's been three (whole) days he's sick of it and is declaring a revert war 4.He (intentionally or unintentionally) had done some bad google searches and didn't seem to like it when it was pointed out by another user.
Last time, the page needed to be protected because of a war like this. Now, most of the editors who had supported the old name have come around to the consensus (for example, [here]), but I'm afraid it'll all be undone by the two hold-outs.
What is the best course of action?Wait for their "war" to start?Request pre-emptive protection? The debate has not stagnated--instead, it's quite lively.I'd understand them wanting to move if they weren't getting responses, but their arguments constantly meet with replies.I also feel three days is not much time on their part before openly "declaring war"--something in itself that I feel to be in bad form.Your thoughts are appreciated. —LactoseTIT 03:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I've warned both editors to not engage in such tactics. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Reconsider please
As an administrator you have more power on Wikipedia. But I don't think your judgement is fair on the talk page. The discussion was still going on and a sudden comment of "consensus has been reached" was not sufficient enough for removing the tag. The argument was still hot and removing the tag was not timely.
Also, I don't think you are treating Wikimachine and myself fairly. It feels as if you are trying to isolate us just because we don't agree to the name. Also, I don't feel you are treating the article from a neutral view and it seems you agree with the new move. Good friend100 12:41, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- My comments were pointed specifically at the ones indicated in the warning. I am not participating in the discussion regarding what title is appropriate for the article and I will be fine with whatever the participating editors decide. So, don't go accusing me of being on one side or another because it won't fly. My actions have been fair on both sides of this petty argument. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:46, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Petty as in, the "Hideyoshi's" side is petty. Before accusing us of not listeing and cooperating, the other editors don't even bat an eye to what we are trying to get the message to.
-
-
-
-
- No, "ppetty" as in "all of you are wasting so much time arguing over insignificant details that don't really matter." "All of you" includes both sides. In the time you've wasted bickering over little details that really matter very little in the long run, you could have been improving countless articles, or writing new ones. Instead, a few hard-headed people who refuse to compromise are holding everything up. You are one of those people. If everyone would put their stupid political agendas aside and just work to make the article accurate and fair, then this encyclopedia would be a much better place for it. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- If you are fair, then why did you take the tag off? I didn't see much participation in the discussion and you took the tag off because of a single editor's comment that the "discussion has slowed down". Thats not fair because the Imjin War side didn't get a chance to argue their position.
-
-
-
-
- I took the protection off because a) things had slowed down and it seemed like people were ready to work together; b) because there's no reason to leave the tag on for that long when it seems like everyone is finally acting like adults. Given the way you and others are reacting and acting since then, perhaps I was wrong to assume that everyone was ready to play maturely together. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

-
-
- It isn't fair because they are not cooperating but you are not warning them the policies. Good friend100 20:06, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- Drop it with the "It isn't fair" whining. Life isn't fair. Is it fair that everyone has to put up with the few hard-headed editors that refuse to work with anyone else unless they get their own way? Is it fair to insist that the English Wikipedia article should have a title that isn't used in most of the English-speaking world? Yes, I've read through all the arguments, and from everything I can tell, "Imjin War" isn't used much, if at all, in the English-speaking world (outside of English translations of a few Korean-language websites). The policy here is to use the title that is most commonly used in the English-speaking world since this is the English Wikipedia. You're welcome to use the title most commonly used in Korean on the Korean Wikipedia, the Japanese will use the most commonly-used term in the Japanese WIkipedia, and the Germans will use the most common term used in German for the German Wikipedia. See how it works? Other less common titles can be included in the introduction (and already are), so this continued bickering over the title is just a big waste of time. This isn't me siding with the Japanese POV; this is me siding with the Wikipedia Policy POV, regardless of how you want to twist it around to fit into your own POV.
-
-
-
-
-
- As for not warning them, I haven't been notified of any policies they've violated. I don't have time to go digging for them (just as I didn't go digging for anything on you and Wikimachine). If you point out where others have been breaking policy, I'll be glad to look into it and take the appropriate action. Until then, please stop complaining that everyone here is against you, or that they are siding with the Japanese POV simply because they disagree with you. There's no place for paranoia here. Everyone is not out to get you. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Surprise Surprise
I can see what is going on in the back of the scene & that you favor Japan, but putting that aside, could you explain to me what is not allowed and allowed in terms of changing Hideyoshi's Invasions of Korea to Imjin War?
This is how I view the situation. LactoseTI and other users don't want "Hideyoshi's" gone & constantly evade my arguments. (You should take time to read them) Therefore, all of my time in the discussion are wasted & I don't see them as cooperative. It doesn't matter what they advocate, they should answer my arguments directly, one by one.
If they don't, then they are not being responsive & thus conceding the arguments. That gives me right to change the title to Imjin War. So when I meant revert war, I meant that LactoseTI & others are going to initiate the war by responding with edits, not with words. (Wikimachine 15:06, 4 September 2006 (UTC))
- You have no idea what's going on in my mind, so don't go accusing me of leaning one way or the other. What is not allowed is threating the other editors that you'll do something if they don't let you have your way or if they don't respond point by point to everything you say. After reviewing the discussions, I can see that they have responded to your arguments, but that you refuses to accept their responses. Then you continue bringing up the same points over and over and get mad at them when they don't want to keep addressing them again and again. Your comments were very clear about who was going to start a revert war.
- This is not the first time you've resorted to petty tactics to try and force your opinion on others here, and you will not get away with it if you continue. Please go back and read my comments again, and then take them to heart. I don't really care what the title of the article ends up being, but I am sick of all this petty bickering between those favoring one title over another. Grow up and start acting like an adult rather than some grade school kid who is mad at not getting his way. Figuratively kicking sand at the others is not going to accomplish anything. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:46, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

New Articles
I think I saw once a list of articles that are in Japanese wikipedia, but haven't made it over here yet.Is there such a list, or was I just imagining?I'd like to start adding some new articles, especially about topics I know a bit about.Such a list would be great to help get started.(I'm asking you since you seem to create an awful lot of articles; I was hoping you got your inspiration from somewhere other than thin air.)—LactoseTIT 12:36, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- Most of the articles I create are by following red links. I'll check the Japanese article to see if there is a link for the red link on the English article, and then translate information from the Japanese article for the English Wikipedia. That's my inspiration, mostly. Occasionally, I'll find a subject that interests me, search for it on JA WP, and then translate from there. I'll also sometimes just search through the JA WP if there is not article that exists, but the subject is mentioned in several JA WP articles, giving me enough to create something here. Hope that helps. (^_^) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:46, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Not quite sure how to handle this
Hi there,
Remember that survey wether the Japanese rock article should be re-renamed to J-Rock? Well, since I'm still rather new to Wikipedia, I'd like to take you up on your offer of assistance on this. You see, the suggested time for this and a related discussion is up, both with a pretty clear outcome. Now I'm not sure wether it would (or should) be my place to remove the respective notices, or is an admin going to do that in due time? My initial efforts, which sparked this discussion weren't quite what one would call good practice (I think 132.205.45.148 called it a "cut-and-paste" move), so I'd really like to do this by the book, so to speak.
Thanks for your time :)

Deletion sorting
Since you're involved in manga/anime and also things in Japan which are not anime/manga-related, I thought I'd get your opinion on the state of the deletion sorting page for Japan. It seems that a majority of the discussions added are for games, manga, or anime. There is already a pointer to the anime/manga deletion sorting page at the top, but it seems to be widely ignored.I'm thinking of either making the sentence bigger or moving it (as an educational step), or alternatively, making a new tag along the lines of "This discussion was re-sorted from the list of Japan-related deletions to the list of Anime and manga-related deletions".What do you think??Am I over-reacting? Neier 11:19, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
- I think that including anime and manga deletion discussions with the Japan discussions is fine. People already pick and choose which discussions to respond to anyway. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 14:11, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- Ok.I wasn't sure if they needed to be treated like categories and subcategories or not.I'll watch both, to see if there are any that are posted to Japan without being posted to the anime/manga discussions, and add them if necessary. Neier 23:37, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- That is worth a try.It would make it easier to pigeonhole discussions, without removing any information; but, it might be even more confusing to people who are used to the list being sorted chronologically.Neier 10:29, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- I looked a bit at this last night, but me and my wikiSkillz aren't sure how to include a normal (non-template) page into another. The ARTICLE NAME syntax seems to work, but I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature.

WikiProject Japan
Please remember that Wikipedia is a community project, and that all users are allowed to contribute to a project (as long as it is in good faith) regardless if they are a member of it.--TBCTaLk?!? 19:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I understand that. However, you were removing items placed there by members of the project, without any discussion or apparent concern for the reasons behind why those items were placed there originally. That is the reason for the concern here. Again, you're welcome to make contributions to the project, but please don't try to force your opinions of which links should and should not be on a project's page (any project). If the members of a project want a link on their project page, then there's no reason for it to not be there. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:41, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

New "Likely" socks
Hi Nihonjoe:
I was suspicious of User:LactoseTI and User:Komdori's behavior before and a recent edit made it pretty obvious in my eyes of probable sockpuppetry and so I asked for a checkuser request and the checking admin. said it was a "Likely" case of sockpuppetry. Here is what I wrote about them in detail so that I won't repeat it here: [5].I'm sorry that I usually just write to you about administrative things instead of discussing about ways to improve the content of Wikipedia.Any help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks for your time.
Incidentally, I was wondering if you were keeping up with the current discussion on Talk:Japan about whether or not Continental East Asia and its variants were weasel words. Thanks again.Tortfeasor 18:19, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Geibi line cat
I nominated several line categories for deletion last night.See my notice @ Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains in Japan for details. Now, I notice that you just created another one.Do you think that they are necessary?Between the line articles (which have much more info than just a category listing can have), and the line templates (which also convey a sense of geography within a line), I couldn't convince myself that they were useful; thus, yesterday's CFD. Neier 21:57, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I'm currently in the middle of populating the category, so it's going to have quite a few articles in it. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:03, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- I know that each station would eventually be listed in the category (so, it would have the same set of station names as the line article contains; but, with just the station names in alphabetic order, and no other auxillary info).Do you think this is a useful navigation guide, where someone would actually search for a station by the line (using categories, and not by linking from the line article)? If that's the case, then each line article should be taken out of the ...of Japan category, and it should be populated only with subcats.I'm just trying to imagine the category lists for Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station.I think the categorized lines would be much messier than what we have now; but, I will abide by whatever consensus we get. That's why I copied my notice to the project page. LactoseTI RFCU
With reguards to Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/LactoseTI.Checkusers have the ease of reporting the conclusion they've reached from examination using the following templates: Confirmed, Likely, Possible, Inconclusive, and Unrelated. They are more or less stacked in the order.Confirmed is stronger than Likely is stronger than Possible, is stronger than Inconclusive is stronger than Unrelated. Also, if it were "it's a possiblity", I'd think Possible would've been used, but as to how far Likely is between Confirmed, Possible, and some sort of median point between unrelated and confirmed that's most definately not specified. --Kevin_b_er 03:24, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

4.23.83.100
Is there a centralized location for reporting POV violations?Or after awhile does it just stray into the vandalism category? You had left a warning on this ip's talk page, and I've left several as well, though I ignore most of the edits and just revert them (especially since it's an IP)--though, in this case, it seems to be very long lasting. Each day this ip goes through and changing things from terms like "modernization" to "exploitation," seems to occasionally deliberately add misinformation, etc.The talk page has POV warning spanning the last couple of years.Looking at his edit history, there are few edits that aren't pushing one thing or another.I left a final warning yesterday, but I don't know to where it most appropriate to move next. —LactoseTIT 15:34, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Checkuser
No one bothered to mention the checkuser to me (which was what I thought the policy was); I would have weighed in and I think saved everyone a lot of effort if anyone had even bothered to ask.I checked Komdori's page, and he doesn't seem to have been notified, either.According to another user, he was blocked--which, if true, is quite sad.As I posted on another article, "I know that he's not a sock of me--I know him personally, in fact--we are both faculty at the same university, but we're not even in the same department. Before you all scream "meat puppetry," take a look at the definition--I didn't ask him to join in for my sake, we have independent edit tracks and different interests, don't always agree, and neither are single purpose accounts. If it's true that he's blocked for being a "sock" of me, it's sad.I recently saw the checkuser--it would have been nice if someone had bothered to notify us that it was even underway. If I'm not mistaken, there was never any confirmation--I'm not sure how there could be."
I might add that we are really more casual aquaintances than friends; not much more than sharing coffee or a chat on the phone once in awhile--it's not like we even share a computer.I'm certain that we aren't the only two "real-life" friends that share independent contributions.I'm not sure what we can do at this point, if anything.Your opinion and advice is, as always, appreciated. —LactoseTIT 19:26, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- Please have Komdori discuss the block with the blocking admin. I purposely removed myself from making any decision on this because of my past interactions with both of you. I wanted there to be clearly no conflict of interest on this one. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

And then, as Ayumu Kasuga is known as Osaka, according to the article, her name should be disamgiguated, along with the Osaka prefecture, which is also often simply called Osaka. Finally, rest of the entries are just things that contain Osaka in thier name so they should be listed in the "see also" section per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#The "See also" section. These are the reasons of my edits. --Kusunose 16:12, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Most disambig pages don't have a "See also" section, but rather list things in the manner I listed them. Also, note the very last section on that MOS page, which indicates that nothing is a hard and fast rule. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:17, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- It says "if you have a good reason." I don't think other pages are not following MoS is a good reason. Even if it is, that does not make my edits "incorrect alteration". In the current revision, you have seperated things often simply called Osaka and things that contains Osaka in their names. I think it's an improvement over previous one. Why not make the latter part a "see also" section? I believe Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#Linking to a primary topic should be followed as well. --Kusunose 17:27, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think the current version is a good compromise between our two ideas. There's a little of both in it. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:08, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ok. I can live with that. My primary concern was the mixation would affect usability and now that is fixed. As many of other disambig pages are not following "primary topic" and "see also" style, it's not bad compared to them and stylistc issues are sometimes just personal preference, after all. --Kusunose 23:24, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

On the sudoku article...
While in Keio University, my father was a Staff Writer for the Asahi Press. He was involved in the making of the "Modern Colloquialisms". He would not accept (or the rest of the Staff Writers in the board) including Dr. Edward Seidensticker (who is, as you know, the Japanese-English translator of Genji Monogatari).
I believe that you have incorrectly translated the word Sudoku. The word Su refers to number (the part in which you have correctly translated). The word Doku has two meanings- independent, one, single unit (your translation) and reading (my fathers translation). My father would recommend the phrase "suuji wo yomu". Please reconsider your translation. If you wish to refute my point, say so on my talk page. Sr13 06:11, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- All I translated was what the Japanese Wikipedia article states. I have no idea if the Japanese Wikipedia article is correct in it's claimed origin, but that's what the article states. If you don't like what the Japanese Wikipedia article states, please go argue your point there. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:16, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

- Just goes to show that Wikipedia is still not a reliable source on the Internet. You have placed the article statement under higher esteem then the true facts. Sr13 06:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- If you have "true facts" (is there any other kind?), please feel free to add them to the article rather than attacking me for offering a translation of one statement in the Japanese Wikipedia article. There's no room for one-upmanship here, so if that's all you're about, please go bother someone else. If you're serious about improving the article, then provide verifiable sources for your claims (post them there, not here) and then discuss changing the article (there not here). Just quoting what your dad said (which is not verifiable), or alleging that Dr. Seidensticker said something (which is, again, not verifiable), is not going to cut it. You need to provide verifiable sources there. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:42, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
