Infoboxes
Please stop moving out the infoboxes from the country articles. There's no need for that, and no consensus. Gzornenplatz 23:28, Jan 8, 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe I've missed something, but I was under the impression that the infobox templating are considered to be more streamlined than a bunch of code in otherwise normally formatted text; furthermore, you seemed (and seem) to be the only one actively working against infobox templates. Nightstallion 00:47, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

- No, this has annoyed several people. See here. Gzornenplatz 00:50, Jan 9, 2005 (UTC)

- Alright, I'll cease out-templating the infoboxes. I wasn't aware of this side of the discussion up to now. Nightstallion 01:22, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Template talk:Europe
Hello. On Template talk:Europe you seem to have made a lot of votes, but by each new vote you made, you also deleted the previous vote you had made. It is strange and confusing, so see for yourself. Out of the six votes you made, currently only one is visible (Akrotiri and Dhekelia). Is that what you intended? If not, can you fix it? Thanks. —Cantus…☎ 05:00, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)
- Oh. Yes, I seem to forget on a regular basis that editing different sections of the same article or talk page at once and then saving subsequently will not work... thanks for reminding me. I'll correct that later. Nightstallion 12:04, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Templates
- Copied from Parmestro page*
Regarding the (Flag - Country) templates you created, is there a list somewhere of which countries have which template code? I'd like to include the templates in the UN member list, for instance, but don't want to have to try all of them until I find the correct ones... Thanks! Nightstallion 08:40, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
You should be able to find the flag templates by using IS0 3166-1 alpha-3 codes or the IOC country codes. Parmaestro 13:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
- Okay. I have started creating templates based on the ISO codes meanwhile, and I might as well finish it; at first, I was rather confused that some templates corresponded to the ISO codes, while others didn't. Thanks! Nightstallion 14:00, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- Yes, unfortunately it was difficult to have one standard like ISO codes because of the nature of Wikipedia. I enjoyed reading some of the pages have you set up such as your personal european integration page. I noticed what would appear to be some small mistakes on it that I did not touch since it is a personal page. I was wondering if you would be interested in joining me and some others in a project to improve the European Union articles in Wikipedia. There is a portal page that has been created that might be of interest to you.

- I've been considering that, yes. Just out of curiosity, though - what small mistakes? I was fairly sure I had pretty much everything correct (apart for my uncanny interest and love for separatism in all forms, which might slant the view on a few things in what might appear as a 'wrong' direction...). Would you mind telling me which ones? Thanks! Nightstallion 20:23, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

- And with the single exception of India, I haven't run into any trouble at all. All states and territories (with the exception of such... "dependencies" as Norfolk Island, Bouvet, ... - I prefer to ignore those) have ISO-conform templates now. Almost all, that is. Nightstallion 21:33, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Template:IND
{{IND}} is used in many places, and changing it for a completely different use foesn't work, unfortunately. --SPUI (talk) 16:58, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
- Mh. Is it really absolutely necessary to have a template that just contains a wikilinked word in it? I'd be willing to take over the work of editting the articles it is used in, if it's too much work for you, but I'm trying my best at standardizing the templates to ISO codes... Thanks, either way. Nightstallion 20:21, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
Euro coins
Hi. Thanks for responding to my question. One other detail: are the majority of coins you encounter Austrian? LeoO3 00:30, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

- Indeed I am. Currently, I am studying for my Matura, however, and if you add dance courses and other activities to that, I lack the time for more in-depth wiki activities; as soon as my summer holiday starts, however, I plan to get active in the EU project. Nightstallion 07:26, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Template:ISO
You expressed interest in an ISO flag template: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Flag_Template#ISO_template (SEWilco 06:18, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC))
- Thanks for the notice. Nightstallion 08:29, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I found it necessary to make the non-ISO Template:country_flag have 3 aliases: flag file name, Wikipedia article name, and text label for display. At present Template:ISO triggers code which only has the first 2 aliases. Should I add the "text label" alias? I think it is better to use the present code, which displays the supplied country code, as that enforces the use of ISO country codes rather than hiding whatever the user typed. (One of the reasons I added "text label" alias is so a reference to the USA 48 star flag would show as "USA" rather than "USA-48", and "USA-MN" shows as "MN".) (SEWilco 03:19, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC))
- If you think Template:ISO is ready, want me to try to have a bot convert your template collection? (ie: Template:IND) (SEWilco 03:39, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC))
-
- Sure. Convert as in redirect Template:IND to the corresponding Template:country_flag variant? Nightstallion 13:54, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- Redirect wouldn't translate exist usage. Replacing the content of Template:IND with {{ISO|flag|IND}} should work. Hmm... That produces "Template:ISO", with IND as the label. Should I make the name of the country be the text label? Another option is {{flagicon|IND}} [[India]] : " India". (SEWilco 14:54, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC))
-
-
-
-
- If you make the name the label, we'll get in trouble with Democratic People's Republic of Korea or Democratic Republic of the Congo or even simple Central African Republic, which are just too long for sensible use in a template. Mh... The latter variant looks okay, I think. Nightstallion 15:18, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

- SEWilcoBot is initializing the flag data. Going slowly due to new code being tried. I'll get the flag data ready before dealing with the country template set (which were used to seed the data). Note that I tested the templates on {{USA}}. I'm also seeding {{flag}} with those country codes, so the ISO three letter codes will be in place for general use, not only in {{ISO|flag|CountryName}}. (SEWilco 06:41, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC))
- SEWilcoBot is now going through your ISO templates in United Nations member states and converting to {{country}}. I set the delay at 2 minutes, so it will take some hours. Converted flags are slightly larger, as too many details were being lost. All ISO country codes are working (my test page is a tad crowded :-). However, the conversion is using the names in the templates rather than the ISO codes. You mentioned Bouvet Island earlier, and as it has no flag its "flag" is a blank image. (SEWilco 06:06, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC))
-
- Conversion completed. The Qatar flag looks small, but that's because most of it is white. Other flags have same problem, I'll see if I can get a frame around them. (SEWilco 14:33, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC))
- Nope. Rendering inline does not allow a frame, only a size and alt-text label. I can't alter all the flag images because those represent the flags as they are. Someone could create versions for iconic use (probably in a small standard size), but at present I'll leave them as they are. (SEWilco 14:52, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC))

Translate a motto, please?
I see from your user page that you are a multilingual Wikipedian in a great level. Admirable. Anyway, I found you through the category of users of advanced knowledge of Latin because I have that cool three-word motto that I came up with the other day to use it as an advocate for AMA and I'd like to know how it is in Latin. I myself know nothing of the language. Ευχαριστώ προκαταβολικά.--Bill the Greek 10:21, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

-
-
- Actually, I saw it just fine. (In case you're wondering, BTW - I actually do not speak Demotic, but have learned Ancient Greek in school for four years. For lack of a "Ancient Greek" template in the Babel series, I'm using "Modern Greek".)

- Eternally gratefull, Mr. Nightstallion, eternally grateful. And for your information, my knowledge of Ancient Greek is much lower than yours. I am not good in foreign languages because it is not easy for me to learn complicated grammars. The only reason I am a fluent speaker of English is that its grammar is simple. Ancient Greek is not a foreign language but its grammar is damn difficult!--Bill the Greek 08:23, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

- No problem at all, glad I could help. And yes, the grammar of Ancient Greek is four or five notches up from Latin - at least in Latin, I'm always sure where the stem of the word ends and where the suffixes start, but in Ancient Greek... ah well. Still, I love languages, and would love to add a couple more to my repertoire (Russian, Swedish, Swahili, for example)... Too bad the day only has 24 hours. Bah. As I told you, I am using a public computer to access Wikipedia, and it happened that the day before yesterday the Internet connection over there had a problem. Then I came again yesterday and the Internet was all right, but I couldn't enter Wikipedia! I could access several sites and I could not access Wikipedia, nor any other sister project, as well as another irrelevant page. They told me that the computers had no problem and there must have been a thing with the site, but today I am here and there is nothing in the Signpost. What is going on here?--Bill the Greek 06:32, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Katakana, for fun
Nightstallion, may I suggest that maybe ナイットスタリオン sounds closer to "Nightstallion" than the ナイトスタリオン you're currently using. I only had a year of Japanese, and that was a little while ago, but I like the Katakana you're using! - grubber 12:24, 2005 August 5 (UTC)
- While my knowledge of Japanese is actually limitted to translating Japanese CCG cards into English, my knowledge of katakana is very good, and I've up to now seen "night" only seen transliterated as ナイト and never as ナイット (which also makes sense, since in English diphthongs are always "long" vowels, and ッ tends to make the vowel before the affected consonant become shorter to a strong degree (compare ヒット for "hit"). Thanks for the input, though! ナイトスタリオン
ㇳ–ㇰ 15:23, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
- Your katakana sounds more advanced than mine; I cannot recall seeing "night" in Japanese. It sounds like there should be a ッ there simply due to the glottal stop I hear when I say it out loud (to make it sound like night-stallion rather than nights-tallion). Hey, it's your name! I thought it was cool to see the katakana, and thought I'd say so. Take care. - grubber 17:15, 2005 August 5 (UTC)

Macedonia(ns)/disclaimer poll
There is an ongoing poll here about the use of a Disclaimer stating that "Wikipedia has no official position concerning the use of the name Republic of Macedonia etc.". As in previous cases (most notably the Macedonians/Macedonian Slavs poll) this poll would be decided by grossly nationalistic voting.
The author of the poll told me this:
- You are right that the poll was not a good idea, since the NPOV is not subject to negotiations, but I have no way to remove those disclaimers: the Greeks keep reverting them and the rest of world avoids entering in the negotiations of Balkan issues like the plague. I was hoping that the poll would attract some people, but instead it attracted the same old Greeks vs. non-Greeks. bogdan | Talk 19:10, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
As a fellow Wikipedian, I can not be more than terrified by this statement. Not surprisingly, the "For the disclaimer" vote is 100% composed of ethnic Greek votes, and currently it is in the lead. It is in my deepest belief that Wikipedia should not mould under the pressure of nationalism (from neither side). That is precisely why I am abstaining of the poll, stating my reasons here.
Please, your possible avoidance of entering in the negotiations of Balkan issues like the plague is causing Balkan disputes to conform to nationalist narratives (logically, to the narrative of the biggest nationality), and this is something that is done in direct opposition to NPOV policy. It is mostly up to neutrals to decide on the issue, and it is only up to them to stop nationalism. So, please, participate in the discussion, or in the poll. --FlavrSavr 15:04, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Official Languages of Austria
Croatian, Hungarian, and Slovenian (and perhaps other languages) have official status in some municipalities in Austria. Could you please tell me in which ones, if you know. I'm tying to find out for the list of official languages by state page. – Zntrip 03:25, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've written to Statistics Austria about the issue. If I don't forget, I'll get back to you about it; if I do forget, just ask again in a few days' time. — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 13:19, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, and as far as Bundesländer are concerned, that's easy. Croatian (or, more formally, Burgenlandkroatisch) and Hungarian in Burgenland, Slovene in Carinthia. — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 13:22, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your help. – Zntrip 23:20, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
I added the languages to the list. Could you check it to make sure that it is correct? – Zntrip 22:32, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
- Well, no. As far as official languages are concerned, there's only Croatian and Hungarian in Burgenland, and Slovenian in Carinthia, as far as I know. I already corrected that for you. Furthermore, regarding your request about official languages in the Gemeinden, I'm afraid that Statistics Austria couldn't help me with that request; on a second thought, however, I don't think you'd really want to have all Gemeinden with their official languages in a list about official languages worldwide, anyway, or would you? — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 09:59, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
I don't understand? Territories, states, and subnational entities are encluded on the list. – Zntrip 00:51, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not sure you understand what Gemeinde is - the lowest level. Townships, more or less. There's problaby a couple of thousands of them. Even if only one percent of them have an official language not official in the whole Bundesland, that'd be a lot. Doesn't matter, anyway, as I haven't been able to acquire a complete list of all Gemeinden with special official languages. — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 09:04, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Ok, I understand know. Gemeinde, if possible, should be included (instead of the state that they are in) on the list. Thanks for looking anyway. – Zntrip 22:44, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
By the way the address at the bottom of the link could help [1], but I don't know German so I could be wrong. – Zntrip 22:48, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Alright, I've researched it a bit now. The information I haven't been able to obtain for you is irrelevant for a simple reason: Amtssprachen (i.e. languages in which you can officially converse with local authorities) do not have the the same rights as official languages. You've got all official languages you need already. Whether some in Hintertupfing can write to his Gemeinderat in Czech and receive an answer in the Czech is not related to official languages, but only to Amtssprachen, so we can finally resolve this. ;) — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 23:03, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Gah. There are, however, specially protected minority languages, which enjoy statewide protection and... what the heck, I tried to include them in your list using your format as best as I could. Hope I could help. It's starting to confuse me myself, and I thought I was rather well-informed about everything Austrian... — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 23:13, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Thank you very much. :) – Zntrip 00:57, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Glad to help. However, there's two things that are ambiguous now after your changes: Firstly, it's not clear whether "statewide" refers to Austria or one of the nine federal states. Secondly, those languages that are both countrywide protected minority languages and regional official languages now do not clearly state this... Just my €0.02. — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 01:32, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
On the list, statewide always refers to the country. Languages in parenthesis that have a province, state, municipality, etc. inside of them are regional languages in said area. Languages with statewide minority language after them are languages that have minority status throughout the nation. Hope that makes it clearer. (¿€0.02 = Two cents? I don't get it) – Zntrip 04:11, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. Yes, that makes it clearer. You might want to include that somewhere in the introduction more clearly. ;) And yes, €0.02 is two cents. — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 13:21, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
But in Austria isn’t it written €0,02 with a comma? ;) Thanks for the advice on the page and for your help. – Zntrip 23:13, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
- True. But in Austria, we don't write English, either, and in English, it's written with a decimal point, to the best of my knowledge. ;) Sure, no problem. Glad to be of help. If I can help with anything else, just write. ナイトスタリオン ✉ 23:40, 28 September 2005 (UTC)
native speakers of dead languages
You're a native speaker of Ancient Greek! Neat! You must be really old! -Lethe | Talk 10:43, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Not really. The only template that exists for Ancient Greek is the generic "native speaker" one. I just thought that if anyone needed someone with knowledge of Ancient Greek, I'd rather have this wrong template (I consider myself at grc-2) than none. ::shrugs:: — ナイトスタリオン ㇳ–ㇰ — 20:11, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- Well, I don't think it's as cool as being 2500 years old, but for your information, there is a grc-2 template, although there's no one in it, so its category link is red. You'd be the first! There's also a grc-1 with about two dozen people. There's no grc-3 or grc-4. Odd that there's is a grc native. By the way, finish this translation of the grc template for me. I think it says something like "Dead is the ancient Greek language." and then the second sentence I got nothing. I'd probably be grc-0, if there were one. -Lethe | Talk 21:59, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

- Oh. Well, maybe I should have checked again a few weeks after the first part of the template was put up... Correcting other people's comments
Thank you for going through all the effort of converting Champions League links to UEFA Champions League. However, although I understand it was done in good faith, could you please refrain from changing comments people have made on talk pages (such as mine on Talk:UEFA Cup). Partly because it damages the historical context that the comments were made in (i.e. when Champions League really did point to the relevant page), and partly because editing other people's comments without their permission, for whatever reason, is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. Thank you. Qwghlm 11:26, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

At link repair you said that "Nassau and Nassau (disambiguation) need to be switched." Why is that? Also, could I remove your signature from the project page's "Done" section, the flag and katakana are a little distracting and you can always bring up any issues on the disucssion page? Thanks for contributing to the project! --Commander Keane 15:41, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem. The need for the change is that Nassau (disambiguation) forwards to Nassau, and in my opinion it would be more logical the other way round... ナイトスタリオン ✉ 14:18, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
Also, Northern Alliance has about 30 article links to it, so why is it in the "Done" section, are they very recent additions? --Commander Keane 17:07, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
- To the best of my knowledge, yes. When I marked it done, there were only two or three links from strange user pages to it... ナイトスタリオン ✉ 14:18, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Hello! I hope you're well. I'd like to thank you for participating in the vote earlier to include the HDI in the country infobox/template. Yay!
After a lengthy gestation, a discussion piece has been prepared to help give form to the vote. If you've a preference for how and where this information should appear in the infobox, I'd appreciate it if you head on over there and comment. :)
After a decision is arrived at, if at all, I'm also hopeful to prevail upon you to add the values (if you're willing and comfortable) for a handful of countries; the more people doing it, the less time it will take to implement the vote and realise the fruits of our collective labour.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again for your co-operation! E Pluribus Anthony 03:56, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks
I'm glad you are happy with my ... text. I put it there while I was working on it and eventually posted it to [2]. It didn't catch much attention and is in the archives now. Anyway, it could be useful again, this discussion seems to go around in circles a lot, starting by somebody proposing a random move on WP:RM and then the rollercoaster beginning. I tend to monitor that page, but this whole business gets very argumentative as there are very stubborn people on both sides. Stefán Ingi (talk) 23:02, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Taiwan
In your note, you put Taiwan (Still officially "Republic of China") under possible secession. I know this is a sensative subject, and there are groups of people that support independence. However, about equal size of population in Taiwan leans toward unification.
- Yes, but unification's boring. ;) Quite frankly, my notes are very far from NPOV in any way, since I'm mostly in favour of secessionists, just for neophilia's sake; I also have the impression that when faced with the two-way choice between officially and finally joining a decidedly undemocratic country like the PRC and trying to go it alone officially, one would tend to choose the latter. ::shrugs::
Also, you said "I'm rather unhappy with the wikipedia policy of "if English name and official name clash, use English name"; therefore I support the following page moves". So I'm just curious if that applies to Republic of China as well.
- Mh, good point. In this case, I suppose I'd go with ISO, which uses Taiwan.

- I know, thanks.

The currency moves
Hi, I think we can safely assume that the currency moves should be carried out. I did a few yesterday, many of them don't need an admin. Unfortunately, WP:RM is starting to run up a huge backlog maybe because the currency moves look a bit daunting. I think the Rùm vote which I parttook in should also be closed, but unfortunately one support vote should be discounted so it's going the "wrong" way. Anyway, enough for tonight. Stefán Ingi 01:03, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
- Did what I could for Rùm, moved the ones that I could. Could've done that before, actually, I just wasn't aware that the existence of a redirect doesn't necessarily mean that I can't do the move myself. ;) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 07:53, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Czech Republic to Czechia
Wouldn't "Czechia" be awfully homophonic to "Chechnya", at least for those unfamiliar with how to pronounce the two? Andjam 15:16, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
- Not really. Chechnya is tshe-tshni-ya, while Czechia is either tshe-ki-ya or tshe-khi-ya (with kh like ch in Loch), depending on how well you can pronounce it. Say, aren't Australia and Austria awfully homophonic, at least to those unfamiliar with what the difference is? ;) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 17:15, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

- Urban legend, though there are a lot variations of t-shirt designs with road signs stating "no kangaroos allowed" and the text "No kangaroos in Austria" beneath it.

Re: Bot
Well, I'll advise you as far as I can. Basically, I use the Python bot framework at http://pywikipediabot.sourceforge.net and run one of the scripts supplied, specifically solve_disambiguation.py, with certain arguments that cause it to move all references from one page to another, aiding me in cleaning up the backlog on WP:RM.
I'm not doing anything particularly special. However, that framework contains a lot of scripts for a lot of purposes, so you may well find something you need. Don't forget to read WP:BOTS first and request permission on the talk page for a trial, once you know what your bot will be doing. Rob Church Talk 07:36, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Please could you add a talk page for your mass move, or include the talk paese for each move. --Philip Baird Shearer 22:34, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Kakashi Bot
Am I correct in assuming that one can request jobs to be done by your bot here? - For countries/regions with the terms "Republic" or "Islands" in their short name, correct grammar is "Flag of the Czech Republic", not "Flag of Czech Republic". Image names are expected to follow the same naming rules as article, AFAIK, so this grammar mistake should be corrected, and it'll be much easier with a bot. Furthermore, I've managed to upload basically all the national flags in svg format, and those should replace the earlier png versions, so the bot could be put to further use... Regarding your sig image.
Hi, I notice Image:Austria flag large.png have been marked as redundant, I'd recomend you change your sig to use Image:Flag of Austria.svg instead. That way new instances of the png flag won't keep poping up when you sign things, and it's easier to replace all use of the image somewhere down the line (I'm toying with the idea of making a "redundant image replacement bot" myself). Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 17:46, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Oops. Rather embarassing, that, seeing as how I'm one of the two or three people who did most of the uploading of new SVG flag images over at the commons... I'm also trying to standardize use of national flags over all the wikipedias. If I can help you in any way, drop me a line; currently, we've got flags for all ISO-coded regions except for the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, and Jersey. ナイトスタリオン ✉ 13:31, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
Mergers & acquisitions
Well, as you know, the October referendum was successful, with the majority voting for the merger. The lawmakers are currently working on a draft of the constitutional law that will be the basis of new Kamchatka Krai. I have not heard anything new on the actual merger date yet (I think it's still sometime in 2007), but I might have missed the news. The final date will probably depend on how fast the draft is signed into law, among other things.
As for the flags—sorry, I was not actively looking for them. By the way, the ones which are already in Wikipedia—where did they come from? Is {{PD-flag}} still something we can slap on pretty much any flag image? If so, I might be able to locate them, but they may not be of very good quality.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 00:47, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- AFAIK, User:Bart l added most of them from heraldika.ru, according to his summaries (e.g. here), but he said he couldn't find flags of the three oblasts still missing. (Pskov, Kaliningrad and Novgorod, IIRC.) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 00:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, I think I've got the root of the problem: As of 1999 or so, they didn't even have official flags (according to fotw.net), and it's apparently difficult to get information from Russian sources when you're asking them in English... Sadly, I don't speak Russian yet, so I can't try to ask in Russian and see if that gets better results. ナイトスタリオン ✉ 01:01, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- And yet another note: This or this should be the flag of Novgorod, this, while technically the flag of Kaliningrad City, also seems to be the oblast's flag... though I'm not sure. And this seems to be Pskov's flag. If you can confirm that somehow, it'd be very nice of you to upload them subsequently... I don't want to do it before I've got confirmation from someone. ;) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 01:09, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Flag of China
Hi, just wondering, is there any particular reason why you're moving Image:Flag of Peoples Republic of China.svg to Image:Flag of China.svg? The PRC / ROC arrangement was set up for NPOV reasons. The Chinese Wikipedia is especially sensitive to this issue and I doubt people would be willing to make this change. -- ran (talk) 02:56, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, I am also a Chinese Wikipedian. There is no such state named "China" in the world, there exist only two states with "China" in their names: "People's Republic of China" (whose capital currently resides in Beijing) and "Republic of China" (whose capital currently resides in Taipei). Although the former is commonly referred as "China", and the latter is now commonly referred as "Taiwan", these abbreviations are never formal or appropriate for a reliable and trusted encyclopedia. Instead, they stir up disputes among people from both sides (in both PRC and ROC, or say in both Mainland China and Taiwan). Wikipedia should be sensitive to these matters and carefully maintain NPOV by avoiding referring PRC as China and ROC as Taiwan whenever possible. I think that Image:Flag of Peoples Republic of China.svg should be restored. Thank you! --roc [[User_talk:R.O.C|(talk)]] 06:46, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Aye, I would suggest Image:Flag of Peoples Republic of China.svg and Image:Flag of Republic of China.svg if you want to standardize names. -- ran (talk) 07:08, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

- Well, ..-1 means I can understand the language decently if written down or spoken slowly. Swedish is actually the language I understand with the most difficulty, though I did comprehend what you wrote without using a dictionary. My German and English are at par, my Spanish could still use some improvement if I want to get it at a level comparable to my German and English, Latin and Ancient Greek will likely remain at their respective levels (six years and four years in school, respectively). I understand French, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan mostly because they're just Latin/Spanish with lots of orthographical mistakes. ;) I can understand Modern Greek barely, if I know what I'm doing, thanks to my knowledge of Ancient Greek, and I've got a basic grasp of Japanese due to my interest in animé.

However, I think I would decline any such effort, at least for now. I'm happy to make quality edits – and have at times made somewhat controversial ones! (though not necessarily out of malice) – but I'd rather solicit interest first from users that have some interaction with me and for me to gauge whether or not this would be a worthy venture with a good chance of success on my end. As well, while I have designs on what Wikipedia can be, I'm well aware of what it sometimes isn't. A play on words (and your alias!): if wishes were horses, I'd be on Sable Island, and not just in the stable. :)

Euro coins
Sorry it took a while to reply (I forget sometimes that I've written something on a talk page) but I just thought you might like to know I replied to your reply on the Euro talk page about the coins. I just thought I'd tell you here, just to clear up what I don't get about the phrasing on the coins pages. This is the reply
Sorry, I was also a bit unclear. What I meant was the way officially (in trade) all the old currencies (IEP,FRF,DEM etc.) were replaced in 1999, but in cash, they weren't replaced until 2002. That is what I think is wrong, it doesn't say if it means (using the Estonian Kroon as an example)
- in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK and begin trading (still in Estonian notes) as EUR
- in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK changing to EUR, and the cash will come in at the same time
- in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK changing to EUR, and the cash will come in at another point, but this will also be in 2006.
- RedHotHeat 17:05, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- I thought it was pretty clear that for the currencies that are replaced by the euro later, the changeover would be handled for cash and trading at one single date; but maybe that's because I've read quite a lot about the subject already. Anyway, what do you suppose we add to which article to make it clear? It doesn't make too much sense to add that to each individual coins article, but rather the general one about the euro itself, no? ナイトスタリオン ✉ 19:28, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

- (sorry for this long reply wait. I didn't forget, I just wasn't available) Oh ok. Well I don't really know what could be done. I mainly just posted here to clear up what I meant. I assumed it would be possible this time to do both on one date, but I was thinking it would be very hard to manage. Well, I suppose the easiest thing is to put it on the main page, but the way I say it is, if you don't read that, then the problem is still there. - RedHotHeat 22:08, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Your edits to Florin
Hi. I'm see you reverted some of my reverts of your edits. That's OK, let me explain what the problem was. When you changed the spelling of some of the referenced articles, you broke the links to them. If you think the articles are incorrectly named, what you should do is move the articles to their correct titles, then go back and fix up the links (using the What links here tool on the left side of the page). In the case of English coin Florin or Double Leopard, I suspect it would be best to rename it to English coin Florin, and make Double Leopard redirect to there. - Well, first of all, take some more time. Get more familiar with Wikipedia, participate in the various votes for deletion, in meta-talk, join meaningful discussion at WP:RFC, and so on. And while I don't write as many edit summaries as I should and would like to (I just regularily forget), it would be a substantial bonus for your next nomination if you'd regularily write edit summaries. Have fun editting, and be sure to try again in half a year or so; chances are good I'll support then if you follow some of my suggestions. Cheers! ナイトスタリオン ✉ 12:24, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
BD2412's RFA
Although my RfA is not over yet, I figured that since so many people voted before it had been posted, I may as well start thanking people before it wraps up. It'll take me that long to thank everyone who voted anyway! Thank you, Nightstallion, for your support (really, I wasn't already an admin!) - I'll do my best as an admin to make the reality of Wikipedia rise to the level of the dream. Hi Nightstallion/α,
Thank you very much for your support on my RfA. It has done very well and is currently at 67/0/2. As such, I am posting this in advance of its closure. Boxophile? :)
Hi there; thanks for your note. Is the country/infobox initiative still on? I presume(d) so: I have every intention of culling the country infoboxes you have listed in time, unless you indicate otherwise. I will also try to encourage others to assist, but I do not promise anything. :( E Pluribus Anthony 19:29, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's still on. I was just a bit disappointed by the initial reaction at Talk:Australia. Noone's said anything at Talk:Spain yet, so I'll try substing there and wait if anyone reverts... ;) I'll also ask the one who wrote the bot to convert album articles to use the respective infobox to take a look at the issue. Good to know there's someone else working on this, as well. Cheers! (Oh, and yes, boxophile indeed. grins) ナイトスタリオン ✉ 19:34, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

- Great! If there's anything to learn from this: patience is a virtue. This is a huge, but I think worthwile, undertaking: there may be exceptions that require usage of a unique infobox, and opposition generally, but we can deal with it. Recall the HDI project: I was compelled to mount the vote/discussion, etc. after being shut down initially. Even though it took around 3 months, the proof is in the pudding. If you build it, they will come. :) I hope this helps. E Pluribus Anthony 21:12, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- Only problem is that patience is in fact the only virtue which I have a profound and utter lack of. Well, what to start with, then? A vote at Template talk:Infobox Country with a post at Wikipedia:Current surveys to attract attention so our proposal has some force behind it? ナイトスタリオン ✉ 21:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Country infobox
Re: [3]: I'd expect there would be some opposition, since the infobox template itself is not flexible enough for different countries to use it. Most countries that are not using the template directly are in fact already having boxes very similar to the template. — Instantnood 20:49, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- But it can be made flexible enough. It's not as if the current infobox system is set in stone, never to be changed again. I was aware of the fact that almost all country articles already use something like the template; my goal is/was rather to have all of them use the infobox template itself... ナイトスタリオン ✉ 21:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

My RfA
Nightstallion, thanks for your support on my RfA. The final count was 46/0/0. I hope I'll live up to your faith in me in my use of the mop and bucket. Please accept this wikithanks as a token of my gratitude ;)
On another note, our opposition at Talk:Australia to changing the infobox is nothing against the good work that WikiProject Countries does! And I noticed you support those pages moves - a while back I proposed a naming convention using ISO 3166-1 to name country articles. It's kinda stalled, but you might like to check it out. --bainer (talk) 23:37, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Of course it's nothing against the work, I know. It's no big problem, it's just that I really lack patience. I'll just let you Australians in peace until I've managed to convert all the other articles, and then I'll get back to bothering you as the odd one out. ::grins:: And I'll get myselved involved at the proposal, naturally. ナイトスタリオン ✉ 05:37, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Portuguese flag in svg format
I've reverted all the image links I've found to your new version of the Portuguese flag, now in svg format. Please, if you are going to change a flag image, please consider changing it to a real flag and not to some kind of badly done sketch, I would hand draw the portuguese flag better than that in .svg. The one in .png was taken from the national symbols section of the Presidential website, and I think it should remain like that. 217.129.204.176 22:30, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Your contribution to the Haiti election page
First off, thanks for helping out. I used your information to do a lot of back research. There is one problem though, in this edit you put that the municipal elections have been moved to March 5, 2006. I don't doubt that this is true, but I just have not been able to find a source. I have been trying to find sources for all of these changes and making wikinews articles so it looks cleaner, and I have found what I need for all of the other changes, except this one municipal change. If you can tell me where you saw it, or if you remember if it was in the same article that talked about changes in the presidential dates.... or any hint of where I could find this, that would be great. --MateoP 21:38, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Euro coins from pdf, take two
Hi! Today, the National Bank of Slovakia decided on the motifs to be used on Slovak euro coins. I haven't been able to find information about it on the internet, however upon emailing the NBS directly, I quickly received a detailed answer, including a pdf file containing all eight euro coin designs. Could you extract the images from this file, just like you did for the new designs on euro coins? I'd need to email the pdf to you, naturally, since it's not available on the internet AFAIK. Thanks! ナイトスタリオン ✉ 14:32, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

- Oh ok. I am working on extracting them, but unlike the others, these are on a blue background, AND have been antialiased to it, so I'll either have to remove the antialiasing (which is why I said I'm working on them) or leave it as blue. Which do you think is better? Personally I think white, since it would match the rest. - RHeodt 08:03, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Some still have tiny traces of the original antialiasing, (which you may or may not have noticed) but not enough to notice without zooming in (except maybe 20c) but to have completely removed some would have put them out of shape.
