Nightshade is the common name for a family of plants, some of which are poisonous, others are among the world's most important food plants, including tomatoes and potatoes. See Solanaceae and Solanum. Within the Solanaceae family, there are a number of different plants that carry the same common name, including Deadly Nightshade (Atropa belladonna), Black Nightshade (or Common Nightshade, Solanum sp.), and Heartleaf Nightshade (Solanum cardiophyllum, a wild potato relative from Mexico).
