Rap Nigerien exploded in Niger at the end of 1998.

Rap Nigerien is a mélange of different languages spoken in Niger. The music is soft and kind, and is mixed with the traditional heritage music. The musical scene grew from humble beginnings into an interesting sociologic phenomenon, as it rose in popularity and took over part of the musical scene. Young and dissatisfied people started to talk about objects which anger them - forced marriages, child labor, corruption, poverty and other problems.

Rap Nigerien took part in UNICEF programs as bands performed in benefit shows and programs. In August 2004, UNICEF opened an action "Scene Ouverte Rap", where 45 new groups entered selections among an informal count of 300 existing groups. Selections took place in Centre Culturel Franco – Nigerien between the 5th and 14th of August.

Many groups are still active, several examples include Tchakey, Kaidan Gaskya, WassWong, and Goro G. There are also many newer groups like Haskey Klan, Kamikaz, Rass Idris and Metaphor.
