Nieuw Amsterdam is the capital of the Commewijne District in Suriname. It is a coastal town situated near the mouth of the Suriname River just across from Paramaribo, the country's capital. The town has about 1,200 inhabitants, most of whom are of Javanese and Hindustani origin. Suriname has one of the world's fastest growing tourism industry.This is highly attributable to Dutch football fans.[citation needed]
