Nierstein is a municipality in the Mainz-Bingen district in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Once an imperial village, Nierstein is located in an idyllic setting between the vineyards and the Rhine.

The vineyards in Nierstein were first mentionned in the year 742 during a period of mild warming that peaked about the year 800 (certified by the imperial abbey of Lorsch). The region enjoys sunshine more than 1,600 hours a year. It is one of the driest regions in Germany with only 500 mm (less than 20 inches) of rain a year. The presence of the Rhine makes the local climate especially favorable to viniculture.

Nierstein is 18 km (10 or so miles) south of Mayence and is linked to the autoroute system by B9, a 4-lane highway. Nierstein is a regular stop for the trains between Mayence and Worms. A landing along the river permits boats of all sizes to stop at Nierstein. Bicycle trails connect Nierstein to Nackenheim, Bodenheim, Mayence and Oppenheim and a trail toward Lörzweiler is being put in.

The Nierstein area hosts a number of festivals including

  • the Flower Festival in May,
  • the Redvine Festival (Roter Hang) in June and
  • the Wine Festival (Winzerfest) in August.
