Niddrie, Edinburgh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niddrie is a suburb of south east Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. It is not to be confused with Longniddry in East Lothian. It is southwest of the seaside area of Portobello, and west of Musselburgh. Immediately adjacent to the Barony of Craigmillar and part of Edinburgh City's political ward Craigmillar/Portobello, but also the home of The Craigmillar Festival Society, at one time a highly regarded Community Arts Organisation. Niddrie Mains is almost completely abandoned now with only one or two remaining residents. Seven or Eight city blocks still remain of the original neighbourhood with the northern and eastern areas razed to the ground. The remaining flats are boarded up with mainly red window-seals and the surrounding gardens and vacant lots strewn with litter and abandoned cars. However, new housing has been built at the Hays which consists of 2-storey blocks with gardens and pedestrian only streets. In the eighties, the Niddrie estate was one of the most drug-riddled communities in Scotland and still has problems with heroin use today. Nearby Greendykes was ranked as the 4th most deprived area in Scotland in the recent multiple deprivation index 2006.

The name is believed to be of Brythonic origin, 'nuadha tref' meaning New Settlement.
