[edit] Sig
Can you make your sig close the </font> tags? The colour bleeds in mozilla, otherwise. Morwen - Talk 07:46, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I didn't know this was happening. I thought I'd save some characters in my sig by not closing it. I've closed it now. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:53, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Sockpuppet?
When you see a potential sockpuppet in a vote, the usual approach is to add a short note under their vote, along the lines of "* User has five edits.". Usually, that means their vote will be discounted by whomever closes the discussion. Yours, Radiant_>|< 10:12, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Flag of india
i wanted to change the picture of the flag. but i do not know how to change it. so if u can please change the pic. thanks - kaushik
- Kaushik, you'll have to create an account before you upload an image. To change an image simply upload an image of the same filename. I wanted to change it but am not sure of the chakra. =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:56, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Chhattisgarh
Hello "Nichalp" - the vehicle plate symbol for Chhattisgarh is CG, I beleive so - based on a tele-talk right now with a person at Chennai who had been to Chhattisgarh, and he told me: CG. I have never been to Chhattisgarh myself. I will further confirm after collecting more exact information. --Bhadani 15:49, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] FAC voting
Thanks for reminding. I'd noticed Indian Railways FAC, but I usually time my vote such that with my vote and the associated comments, I try to answer critics. Any way, I've voted as noone might oppose this great article. :-) -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 03:50, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Template:India states
Hi Nichalp. {{India states}} doesn't start counting from 15 from Maharashtra at the head of the second column. I don't know how to correct it. Please take care. -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 05:49, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
- See Image:TemplateIndiaStates.png. Looks like a browser issue. Never mind as noone else in the world would be using Konqueror. :-) -- Sundar 09:27, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
P.S. Delete the temporary images as soon as you see them. They're otherwise a load on our disks.
- I've deleted the images. By the way, take a look at Jewish POV here. -- Sundar 09:38, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Papua New Guinea
A few days ago, you removed the nomination of Papua New Guinea. You stated on the talk-page of the IP who nominated it that it was not up to the standards. I can see the intro is too short, so I agree. Did you notice anything else that needs to be done?--Fenice 11:32, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Commons admin
Hi there, we haven't spoken before, but you know my boyfrind David. I was wondering who can and can't vote on the Admin nominations on Commons. I noticed you are an admin there, which is why I'm asking you. Please let me know as I was hoping to nominate myself today. Thanks, --Silversmith Hewwo 14:38, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Geography articles
I posted your suggestions to the talk-page of Papua New Guinea. You seem to have quite a clear concept of what a country-article should look like. Many of the country articles here need improvement badly, long before tiny PNG does, look at Brazil for instance. I thought you might be interested in founding a geography collaboration? Something like a biweekly geography workshop.--Fenice 09:01, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I have critiqued a few country and city articles in the past in Peer review and Featured Article Candidates. I agree with you that country article should be given a higher priority. I don't think I can be committed to a geography collaboration. I am willing to lend my ideas, but contributing and taking care of them will take up a lot of my time. I write India-related featured articles, and since I am usually the only one contributing to the material, it takes up most of my time. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:25, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] India page images
An anon User:130.237.79.106 had been replacing the images on the India page. I had messaged him yesterday, but after receiving no response after two warnings I blocked him. He emailed me saying that the images were too balanced in favour of North India. Since I had selected the images, I checked the list.
- Taj is from N. India
- Gumpa dance is fron NE India; Sikkim
- Goa temple is from W India
- Sanchi stupa is from Central India
- Infosys is from S. India
- Himalayas, Vishnu, and Holi can be replaced by more representative images.
What do you think? I think its balanced. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:31, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
- It is well balanced. Unfortunately, some of us South Indians mistakenly see everything to the north of us (including the west and north-east) as North India. Perhaps you can add Pongal to the list of secular Indian festivals and Onam to the list of Hindu? festivals to balance the culture section. Please note that I do not seek to place images of any of these. -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 09:40, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

- Thanks, I've added Pongal (though it doesn't seem to fit in with Hindu festivals). You could try and NPOV things over. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:50, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
- I've reworded it a bit, but still not sure if Pongal should be mentioned there. One argument in favour of having it is because it is a nearly true secular festival. Otherwise, there is no way it merits a special mention considering we left out so many regional festivals. -- Sundar 10:02, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Would you please add Diwali image instead of the holi image? The image I tried to add, and you reverted is licenced. I think for an image of that size, the arrangement of lamps looks a lot better and represents Diwali better than a thumbnail of pictures showing people having good time. I really think the diwali image is very good. (maybe have to be resized a bit.) I think Diwali should make either sides happy. IndiBoy 09:53, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Having a free image is mandatory for featured articles. You can take a photograph during this Diwali and then upload it under {{GFDL}}. We'll be happy to put that one. -- Sundar 10:02, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
But the image IS free. Is it not? IndiBoy 10:09, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket pics
As I said to Albinomonkey when he first emailed them to me, the file I got was very corrupted. Only four of the images would display, and they were all of a cricket ball. Sorry about that. What is it you need though? I have a Slazenger V200 bat, a ball perfect for illustrating rough side and shiny side, a set of pads, and a digital camera. I could probably get them tonight if you needed them, but I'd rather know what you needed first... As I say, though, Albinomonkey's zip file was very corrupted (or maybe just curtailed), so I can't give you those, else I would have done some time ago! Cheers, smoddy 17:08, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Here's my shopping list:
- Bat - side + front
- pads - "
- helmet - "
- ball - " (rough + shiny)
- full stump
- wicket
- bail
I don't need it in a hurry though. Make sure that there is a clear background to the images. Once taken out, upload it in commons: instead of here. High resolution always a boon. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:41, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, "clear background". Is that a solid colour, or grass? As for Welsh, well. I can say "good morning", "welcome to Wales", "Welcome to Monmouth", "Welcome to Chepstow", "Welcome to England", "school", "slow", "all", and "snooker". I doubt that's what you had in mind. Why? smoddy 22:31, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Solid colour would be preferable, It would compress better. Welsh as I thought it might be a good idea to have a cricket stub in cy:. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:26, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

I have just noticed the stubs you have created to make the red links go away in List of Test cricket grounds. You are a star! -- ALoan (Talk) 19:20, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

- I know, but even so, well done! You might have noticed that I moved the Bombay Gymkhana, btw. If you want to expand the stubs, Cricinfo has profile pages for all Test grounds - I added one to the gymkhana. -- ALoan (Talk) 19:46, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

- I don't think I can contribute much these days. I'm a little busy with a few articles. I'll add a few Indian festivals when I get the time. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:23, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Commons images
Ya, even I wasn't sure about the license. I took it that since they're public servants and it is part of the citizens' right to information, it should be free. Feel free to delete them and remove the links in a couple of articles in English wikipedia.
About the categorisation error, I admit to my laziness. I knew it was wrong, but didn't have the patience to look for categories. Instead of leaving them orphaned, I thought I'll put it under India so that some "bakara" (read you ;) would set it right. -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 05:35, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I've fixed the categories of the images. Please feel free to delete them if there is an issue of license. -- Sundar 08:54, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Good to know that it is in public domain. But, the link you gave goes to the corresponding act in Karnataka. By the way, it would be a good idea to create {{India-PD}} or some such with a link to the act. -- Sundar 09:35, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. -- Sundar 10:20, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket in Latin
Well, it is a little tricky. As I noted on Talk:Cricket, the vocabulary would be hard to find. I may end up having to write "the thrower throws the ball, then the hitter hits it". I'll have a go. After my Latin GCSE on Monday, though. :-) smoddy 13:50, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Kannur
Hi,
What happened to the Kannur COTW ? I haven't noticed any major changes for the past few days. Jisha C J 15:23, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I know. Kannur was selected last sunday, and today completes one week. A new article is [supposed to be] chosen every week. Sumalsn had nominated it but failed to contribute anything during the past week, despite me informing him. Had there been more edits to the article, I could have left it for one more week though. Bear in mind that commitment must be shown mainly by the persons who nominate and support it. If I leave it too long people who vote for current articles will lose interest. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:32, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)
HI, Lets see if i can do anything about it. But i would be offline for next 2 weeks or more due to travel.. Jisha C J 04:21, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Please revert back again
This is not the first US Supreme Court case we have had, so please put back the old one if you don't like the MGM vs. Napster. Mind you, it is a highly significant case, so I'd appreciate it if you could put that one back again. - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 06:56 (UTC)
- It could have implications in Australia as our often country closely follows what happens in the U.S. (see our fair trade agreement, also affects Kazzaa and other P2P companies). The other day we had a U.S. only entry on the template about a Supreme Court Case - Kelo v. New London. - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:10 (UTC)
- P.S. sorry about the equisitely worded message on your talk page - was on a call at the time :-) Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:12 (UTC)
- Confused. What is wrong with "In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of the United States rules, in MGM v. Grokster, that file sharing P2P companies can be held liable for copyright infringement."? None of the other non-US related news articles have had to explain the global implications. (I am not an American). - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:23 (UTC)
- PS, I was talking about WP:ITN, you could use the same text in the current events page. - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:30 (UTC)
- We need to say which major software companies. I think we shouldn't try to analyse the case, just mention that the decision was handed down and reference the case. Incidently, we should note that it is MGM v. Grokster - the well known text of the case should be used. - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:35 (UTC)
- Makes sense, though that one got reported widely. - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:59 (UTC)
- OK, I'll respect that decision. However, why did Kelo v. New London get listed the other day (I asked for it to be listed)? - Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:50 (UTC)
- P.S. I can see that it was noted in Qatar: see Court: file-swapping websites may be sued and in Singapore: see US Supreme Court rules against Grokster... not sure if this will sway you :-) Ta bu shi da yu 28 June 2005 07:55 (UTC)

[edit] Licensing form
The idea has been proposed many times, it's simply a matter of the right implementation. For me personally, this is an issue which I would like to address after the implementation of a single login system (which will begin once MediaWiki 1.5 has been fully deployed and tested), as that will also allow us to work on a cross-wiki upload system (particularly for transparent uploads to the Commons).--Eloquence* June 30, 2005 06:53 (UTC)
[edit] Portal (in India)
I think portals belong at the top of the page because they serve as cover pages for the articles. It would not make much sense to read a portal after you have finished the article. What do you think? PeregrineAY June 30, 2005 09:09 (UTC)
- I'm neutral on this as I don't have any preferences. But with the infobox taking so much space on the right, the portal image makes it look cramped on top. Raul was the one who removed the link on the India page saying it should not be in the main namespace. I don't know what exactly he meant by that, but to include back on the page, I added it in the external links section. =Nichalp «Talk»= June 30, 2005 09:25 (UTC)
[edit] iFaqeer's comments on Terrorism in Kashmir
- cross-posting at talk:Anon Editor talk:Nichalp and talk:IncMan
I really, really like what you folks have done at Terrorism in Kashmir and what you want to do. Here, quickly, are my comments on the article:
- The article--especially the intro--seems to conflate "militancy" with "terrorism". Even to say that "all militancy in Kashmir is of a terroristic nature" is a valid point of view--one I disagree with, but still a valid one for a person to hold. But that's not what the article says; it just uses the two words almost as synonyms. It starts out doing what I am saying, in Background and the Flashpoint section. Then gets mixed up. In fact, looking more closely, the headings and the actual text seem to be disjointed in this regard. The text is better off, IMHO.
- I have only been able to skim the article, but it seems like it really is a better-than-average description of the militancy in Kashmir. Why not call it that? I am not saying there is no terrorism in Kashmir, but let's point out what, in the whole mix, is terroristic in nature.
- Kudos for a very objective description of the historical background.
- From what I read, the article actually DOESN'T say much about the specific influence of the Pakistani Government--particularly under Gen. Ziaul Haq--in shaping the nature of the militancy and making it more overtly Fundamentalist in nature.
- How can an article whose neutrality and accuracy is disputed become a featured article? That's actually a serious question. Can it?
More later; please feel free to drop me a line (User page or e-mail) to let me know what's going on. I am not following specific pages too well nowadays.
And thanks and kudos again for so consciously and aggressively working to get a complete, balanced picture together.
—iFaqeer (Talk to me!) June 30, 2005 16:18 (UTC)
- I really did not have any part to play in the edits of the article. I just asked IncMan to get all views into the picture. Credit should be given to the editors of the article, not me. =Nichalp «Talk»= June 30, 2005 17:41 (UTC)
