Nicotera (Greek: Nikoptera, Medma) is a comune (municipality) in the province of Vibo Valentia, Calabria, Italy. As of 2001, it had 6,767 inhabitants.

[edit] History

Nicòtera origins lie with the ancient Greek city of Medma which was founded by the Locresis of Locri epizephiri.

During the period of Roman domination it partially survived only through the emporium port, near today’s Nicotera Marina; it flourished beginning from the third century to.C.[clarify]

It has been reconstructed later in the first centuries Christ from someone victorious returning from Africa with the name of Nicotera, from the Greek great victory.[clarify]

In 1065 Robert Guiscard conquered it under the Norman dominion of Roger I. In the thirteenth century it fell to the House of Swabia; under Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II Nicòtera attained economic wealth. To make more profitable such industries and the commerce, Frederick promoted Jewish settlement in the area called "Giudecca", Hebrews Getto to the shade of the castle and the bishop to be protected from the Christian persecutions.[clarify]

In the fifteenth century, under the kingdom of Alfonso of Aragon, it passed under the yoke of feudalism and it decayed. In 1806 the French revolution swept the feudal system and Nicotera. Returned to sit on the throne in Naples his legitimate sovereign, Ferdinando, king of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies, Nicòtera continued to be chief town of the district with its own dependences the communes of Joppolo and Limbadi .
