Nicole Stockdale
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nicole Stockdale is a newspaper copy editor, well known in the industry for her blog, A Capital Idea, one of the first blogs focused on the craft of copy editing to attract a national audience.
Stockdale began her career at The Wichita Eagle in Wichita, Kansas, as an intern in the late 1990s, while she was still a journalism student at Wichita State University. Before joining the Eagle, Stockdale had been an intern for EMILY's List, a Washington, D.C., political action committee promoting pro-choice, Democratic women for political office. However, if Stockdale's political leanings are liberal, she has never betrayed that on her blog, in keeping with the ostensibly objective posture adopted by most mainstream journalists.
She joined the staff of the Eagle full-time in 2000 and remained for three years, starting A Capital Idea during that time. In 2003, she accepted a position as a copy editor on the Universal Desk of The Dallas Morning News, where she was hired by Joel Thornton, but today she works as presentation editor for the editorial section, a position that includes copy editing. She is also the Assistant Editorial Page Editor for Sundays, running the Points section. Nicole has been a presenter at annual conferences of the American Copy Editors Society and is a follower of noted copy-editing expert Bill Walsh.
