Nicolas Hulot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nicolas Hulot was born on April 30, 1955 in Lille. He is an Officier of the Légion d'honneur and a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. He is the founder and president of the Fondation Nicolas Hulot , an environmentalist group first created in 1990, and presents himself as an ecologist.
He is famous for his TV show named Ushuaia, transmitted by TF1. In his TV reports, he shows the damage done to the Earth by mankind and tries to sensitise the viewers to what motivates his support for the ecological change of conscience that he believes in. He recently launched Ushuaïa TV on the cable which belongs to the TF1 Group.
In 2007, five of the 12 candidates to the French Presidential Elections signed his "Pacte Ecologique", affirming that the ecological problems will be the key in all the future decisions concerning every political subject. [1] The importance of the pact, however, has been questioned.
Hulot's Ecology Pact and political views have, however, been criticized by a variety of commentators and actors, including Le Canard Enchaîné. Supporters of uneconomic growth and of political ecology have decried his use of the media and his acceptance of funds from large firms, such as EDF, L'Oréal or Rhône-Poulenc [2][3]. Le Canard Enchaîné pointed out that the products commercialized under the brand of Ushuaïa (shampoos, etc.) are some of the most polluting products of the relevant types. Alter-globalization candidate José Bové criticized him, declaring that "one cannot defend the environment without questioning the economical order of the planet. [4]"
