Nicolà Rescigno

Nicolà Rescigno (born May 28, 1916) is an Italian opera conductor best known for his many recordings with Maria Callas and conducting at her U.S. debut, as Norma, in 1954. With Lawrence Kelly he co-founded the Chicago Lyric Opera, and later the Dallas Opera where he served as artistic director and principal conductor from 1957 to 1990. While at the Dallas Opera, he conducted at the U.S. debuts of Montserrat Caballé, Placido Domingo, and Joan Sutherland. He is the uncle of the conductor Joseph Rescigno. In 1988, he gave the world premiere of Argento's opera The Aspern papers.
