Nick Hipa , born November 30, 1982, is a current guitarist for the metalcore band As I Lay Dying. Hipa joined As I Lay Dying prior to the band's recording and subsequent release of their third studio album, Shadows Are Security. Nick's ethnicity is Hawaiian, Japanese, and Irish. He lived in Hawaii until he was 10 and then moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He now lives in San Diego. For guitars, Hipa used to favor the Fernandes Monterey, fitted with dual EMG 85 pickups, tuned down to Drop C (Drop D down one whole step, C G C F A D). During the Shadows are Security era, Hipa played numerous Gibson Les Pauls, also fitted with dual EMG 85s and tuned to Drop C. Recently, Hipa plays an Ibanez Artist Custom (as seen live, and in the "Nothing Left" video), but this time as the guitar is fitted with an emg 85 in the neck and an 81 in the bridge. On AILD's most recent music video Within Destruction, Nick used an Ibanez Iceman-model with EMG 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck as pickups. For amps, Hipa used to use Mesa Dual and Triple Rectifiers for live and studio work, but recently switched endorsements to Krank amplifiers, and uses their Revolution and Krankenstein heads live.

Recently; at the Soundwave Music Festival in Sydney Australia, Nick was hit in the head by a glass bottle.Written in his Myspace blog- "So last night I got hit in the head by an empty glass Maker's Mark bottle. While it did stun and disorient me, I am completely fine. Lucky for me the bottle was huge so it didn't break and I have no need for stitches. I'm sorry we had to stop our set but I was quite discombobulated for a good while, and more importantly the EMT dude wouldn't let me play because my head was bleeding quite a bit... or some sort of mumbo jumbo like that." The incident did not affect any of the other Australian shows.
