[edit] Early life
Nicholas was born in Meyrin, a bedroom community near Geneva, Switzerland. The family moved to England sometime after Nicholas' birth, and his younger sister, Elisabeta Karina was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Nicholas attended Shiplake College in Henley-on-Thames.
[edit] Future Prince of Romania
On 30 December 2007 Nicholas' maternal grandfather, Michael I of Romania, announced for Nicholas the title Prince of Romania with a style of "Royal Highness", to come into effect either on Nicholas' 25th birthday or upon Michael's death, whichever occurs earlier.[4] On the same occasion, by virtue of his new title, he will become also a member of the Romanian Royal Family; until then he remains a member only of the Romanian Royal House.
On the same occasion, explicitly based on EU legislation and the values of the Romanian society, King Michael signed a new Statute of the Royal House, called Fundamental Rules of the Royal Family of Romania[4], apparently to entail his heritage and that of his predecessors and also in an attempt to replace the old 1884 Law of the Statute. By this new Statute, an anti-democratic[5] act with eminently symbolic importance in the absence of its approval by the Parliament[6][7], there is a new line of succession to the defunct throne of Romania, in which Nicholas is in the third place, after his aunt and mother. However, according to the last democratic royal Constitution of Romania, dated 1923, which is based on the Salic law of succession, Nicholas is barred from the throne. Salic law is unlikely to exist though if the Royal family was reestablished. (see "Line of succession to the Romanian throne").
According to the new Statute, Nicholas will become a member of the Royal Family, part of the broader Royal House, at the time his new title comes into effect; he has also become a dynast and is a member of the Royal House. As Nicholas' aunt, Princess Margareta of Romania is childless, it is most likely that upon the deaths of his grandfather, aunt, and mother, Nicholas would succeed as the future Head of the Romanian Royal House and pretender to the throne.[4]
According to designations of King Michael, the Headship of the Royal House entails governance over the foundations of the family, tenure of the estates and residences of the House, as well as sovereignty over the House orders of chivalry, among other things.
As a descendant of Queen Victoria, he is also in line to the British Throne. He has one younger sister, Elisabeta Karina.
On Feb. 29, 2008, Nicholas Medforth-Mills declared in an interview with Romanian daily newspaper Cotidianul that if the Romanian people asked him to become a King, he wouldn't refuse.[2] Romanian press are already referring to him as "Prince Nicholas," even though he does not currently hold the title.[2]
[edit] Activity
Beginning in 2008, Nicholas is more and more present in the public life of Romania, taking part, for instance, at the 2008 UNITER theater gala[8] and in the work visits throughout the country of his uncle, the Special Representative of the Government, HRH Prince Radu of Romania[9][10][11][12][13][14].
