Nicholas Hoare
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nicholas Hoare is a small chain of Canadian independent bookstores specialising in British books.
Nicholas Hoare operates three locations: one in Montreal, Quebec, on Greene Avenue in Westmount (a second Montreal location in the basement of Ogilvy's department store on Saint Catherine Street closed in December 2006); one on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Ontario; one on Front Street in Toronto, Ontario.
In addition to books, Nicholas Hoare also offers a selection of CDs, primarily jazz and classical.
Nicholas Hoare's advertising features a quote from Edward Gibbon: "A Taste for Books is the Pleasure and Glory of my Life. I would not exchange it for the Riches of the Indies."

Nicholas Hoare was a prominent member of the Board of Governors of The Fraser Hickson Library in Montreal. The Fraser Hickson served the public since the 1800's before Nicholas Hoare and the Board of Governors lost it early in 2007 and the doors were shut to the public. Residents of the community fought hard to save the Fraser Hickson by appealing to the Borough Mayor, Michael Applebaum, but with dealings between the borough council and the library's board of governors taking place behind closed doors the library was finally lost. The community is bereft and the struggle for adequate library services continues in 2008.
