[edit] Plot summary

The two stoners Cheech and Chong have a new business, selling ice cream, named "Happy Herb's Nice Dreams." However, this isn't real ice cream- it's dope-infused ice cream, made out of experimental marijuana, stolen from their friend's illegal marijuana plant.

The two sell the "ice cream" from the truck, and even make trips to a gym. Business is good and introduces them to a variety of freaks and weirdos, and the two soon make a fortune, making thousands to millions of dollars. They plan on using the fortune to buy an island, guitars, and get lots of girls.

Of course, the cops are on Cheech and Chong's tails from the start, as they trick the stoners into selling them "ice cream." Sgt. Stedanko (Keach reprising his role from Up in Smoke), now a stoner, tests the marijuana and slowly turns into a lizard (a side effect of smoking the secret recipe dope). A police raid storms their house, and Cheech and Chong pack up the marijuana ice cream in their truck and drive off, leaving their roommate and the owner of the marijuana-plant to get busted and arrested. Sgt. Stedanko sends out two police officers to find and arrest the stoners.

Cheech & Chong, escaping the bust, go to a Chinese restaurant to celeberate their fortune. There they encounter a record agent who loves Chong, followed by Cheech's ex-girlfriend (Guerrero reprising her role of Donna from Cheech & Chong's Next Movie) and a cocaine-snorting mental patient, Howie Hamburger Dude (Paul Reubens). The four of them snort cocaine under the table, and a drugged-out Chong accidentally signs away all their money to Howie for a useless check (which they're unable to cash due to Chong being illiterate and having no ID).

Cheech takes a drunk Donna out to their truck to have sex when she passes out. 2 incompetent cops show up, almost busting Cheech, when Chong shows up driving their ice cream truck. Not wanting to file reports of the arrest, the cops let Cheech and Chong go.

The two head back to Donna's apartment. After attempting a threesome, Chong goes to get ice. At this point, Donna's ex-con biker husband Animal shows up, fresh out of prison. Cheech tries to escape out the window and ends up climbing the hotel naked. Chong then returns to the room and hides, rushing around naked, to hide from the biker. Eventually, Animal gets Donna on the bed and has sex with her and they pass out. Cheech manages to get back in the hotel and shows up to the room, and he and Chong steal back their clothes and leave.

Narrowly escaping possibly being killed by Animal, the pair realize that a drugged Chong has accidentally signed away all their money to Howie Hamburger Dude. After getting a lift from the two cops sent by Stedanko, the two stoners find and break into the address on the check- a mental asylum. They spend the night, and in the morning they find Howie among a bunch of inmates. Cheech tries to grab Howie to get their money, but the doctors there believe Cheech to be mentally unstable, so he is locked in a straitjacket and chained up in a soft-padded room. Chong (who is believed to be a doctor) manages to find a doctor in the building to help, and Cheech and Chong are both offered "the key to the universe" by the doctor (Timothy Leary).

Cheech and Chong soon become high on the pills and fantasize, before being woken up by the lady in charge. She has realized what has happened and apologizes to them, and sets them free. At this point, Stedanko's cops show up to arrest the two stoners, and the lady in charge and Howie Hamburger Dude are arrested instead.

With all their money gone and their marijuana plant destroyed, Cheech and Chong are left with no way else to get money... but becoming strippers at "Club Paradise", ending the movie.

[edit] Trivia

  • The song Cheech & Chong sing at the beginning of the film, "Save the Whale, Shoot the Seal" is a parody of "Don't Kill the Whale" by the band Yes.
  • Sandra Bernhard, Tony Cox and Geri Jewell make brief appearances during the mental asylum scenes.
  • Novelty artist Afroman paid tribute to the Happy Herb's truck in his "Because I Got High" video.
  • Paul Reubens' line: "You're the guy from the hamburger train, right?", is sampled at the beginning of, and lends the title to, the instrumental jam "Hamburger Train" from Primus's Pork Soda.
  • There is a Restaurant in New York named "Nice Dreams Ice Creams" with a logo similar to the movies opening credits.
  • In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, one of the side missions involves selling "ice cream", the same way it is sold in this movie.
