nib health funds is Australia's sixth largest private health insurer providing cover to more than 680,000 people nationwide.

The health fund was established in 1952 by workers at the BHP Steelworks in Newcastle, NSW. It was originally known as Newcastle Industrial Benefits (NIB) Hospital Fund.

On 5 November 2007, nib became the first Australian private health insurer to demutualise and list on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

While nib is now an established national health insurance provider, the company remains headquartered in Newcastle.

The face of nib is rugby league legend Paul Harragon. Paul’s sporting career includes more than 200 games for the Newcastle Knights, a record 20 consecutive State of Origin games for NSW, leading the Knights to premiership glory in 1997 and captaining the Australian rugby league team.

As well as being the face of nib, Paul is a rugby league commentator and a star of the Nine Network’s The Footy Show.
