Nianija is one of the ten districts of the Central River Division of The Gambia.

Nianija is mostly a fula dominant region of the country. It has lots of other small villages but the capital of that region is Chamen Nianija, otherwise called Carol's warf. With the chief coming from the Cham family since its founding. Cheifstancy is obtained through the parternal lineage of the Cham family. But however, the Alkalo is also always from the Jallow Family. But in the modern day, the alkalo can come from families. The most important part of this region's history is the Cham family who were the founders of the place. It has a very rich history and very interesting people. The school in Chamen was fought and brought by one of the cheif's son, who was also the headmaster, he played a very important role in the development of that area and the surounding villages, he continued to help the people of Chamen until his death in 1985. His name was Abdoulie H. Cham, but the people called him Abdoulie Jarra(as it is in the fula community to hae your mother's name attached to your name). His father was also a chief who took up the role of chief after the death of his father.
