Niall McCarthy (born 1982) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill and with the Cork senior inter-county team.
[edit] Early life
Niall McCarthy was born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork in 1982. He was educated locally and later worked as a bank official with Irish Nationwide. He currently runs his own security company, Niall McCarthy Security, from Carrigtwohill with his brother Conor 'Cha' McCarthy. He has a boxer dog called Ruby. She booful.
[edit] Playing career
McCarthy plays his club hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill, who this year (2007) won the Cork County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.
[edit] Inter-county
McCarthy first came to hurling prominence with Cork in 1998. That year he won a Munster minor medal, coming on as a substitute during the game. In the subsequent All-Ireland final McCarthy came on as a substitute again to win a minor All-Ireland medal. He later played with the Cork under-21 side but had little success. McCarthy made his senior championship debut for Cork in 2002. It was a hugely unsuccessful year for Cork's hurlers, culminating in a strike in Decembe rof that year. The team bounced back in 2003 with McCarthy collecting his first senior Munster medal. Cork later played Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final, however, 'the Cats' were victorious on that occasion. In 2004 Cork lost their provincial crown, however, they later qualified for the All-Ireland final against Kilkenny via the back-door system. The game saw McCarthy collect his first senior All-Ireland, as well as being named as 'Man of the Match'. In 2005 McCarthy won his second senior Munster title following a defeat of Tipperary. Cork later went on to capture a second consecutive All-Ireland title with McCarthy playing a key role in the victory once again. 2006 saw McCarthy win a third Munster medal, however, Cork were stopped in their bid for three All-Ireland titles in-a-row by Kilkenny.
