Niagara Parkway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niagara Parkway is a road along the Niagara River from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie, in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The road is a scenic route from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Table Rock, Niagara Falls and continues as a rural riverside highway to Fort Erie.

The route is a two-lane minor arterial road with a 60 km/h (40 mph) speed limit for most of the length, although the section from Hiram Avenue to Upper Rapids Boulevard in Niagara Falls is a four lane divided road with a 40 km/h (25 mph) speed limit due to high traffic volumes during the tourist season. This section also contains the majority of the route's traffic lights.

Originally built in 1912 and extended in 1936 with a total length of 56 km (35 miles).

The Parkway falls under the jurisdiction of the Niagara Parks Commission, an agency of the Government of Ontario, for most of its length. Most notably, the section running from the abutment of the Rainbow Bridge to the Whirlpool Aero Car belongs to the City of Niagara Falls and is called River Road for this stretch, although still signed as part of the Niagara Parkway.

A popular local tale is that Sir Winston Churchill, after having been driven down the parkway, called it "the prettiest Sunday drive in the World."
