[edit] Overview
Ghebre Selassie Mehreteab is a founding member, chief executive officer and co-chairman of the NHP Foundation. Under his tenure, NHPF has had impressive growth, leveraging $6 million in initial contributions from 24 major corporations and converting it into affordable housing with an aggregate asset value of more than $300 million. Since 1994, NHPF has developed and preserved 43 properties, consisting of approximately 9,000 units in 14 states. Today, NHPF’s portfolio includes 26 properties, totaling more than 5,100 apartment units in 11 states. Current development plans include 6,000 new units, half of which are located in the Katrina-affected areas of the Gulf Coast.
[edit] Rebuilding After Katrina
To help those who have suffered from Hurricane Katrina, NHPF plans to create 3,000 quality affordable housing units in New Orleans and the vicinity at a cost of $300 million. To date, 1,400 units are under construction, and the additional 1,600 units are in pipeline. Four of NHPF’s properties were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, totaling nearly 1,000 units.
[edit] Operation Pathways
The NHP Foundation believes that affordable housing does not end with improving the physical living conditions for America’s neediest families. That is why NHPF established Operation Pathways; providing readiness preparation for preschoolers, education for school-aged children, and health and wellness sessions for all ages at NHPF properties and surrounding communities.
