- This is a Vietnamese name; the family name is Nguyễn, but is often simplified as Nguyen in English-language text. According to Vietnamese custom, this person properly should be referred to by the given name Linh.
Nguyễn Văn Linh (1915-1998) was a political leader of the National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam during the Vietnam-American War. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam from 1986 to 1991. During his time in office, Nguyen Van Linh was a strong advocator of "doi moi" (renovation), an economic plan which's aim is to turn Vietnam economy to a market economy.
