[edit] RE: Sandbox

Thanks for that. I thought it would be a good idea to test major changes to articles before posting them, especially if they are ones which are likely to be accessed regularly and we can't afford to have them broken for any length of time!

Are you new to Wikipedia? I haven't seen you around before! Then again there's so many users on here it's unlikely I see everyone, but I do spend some considerable time browsing this site!

Kind regards Matthuxtable 20:27, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

I see you managed to create your sandbox. Well done! You realise however that you could make the pages in the sandbox a subpae of the sandbox page (if you get what I mean), so /User:Ngriffeth/sandbox/<Sandbox page> (Instead of /User:Ngriffeth/<sandbox page> Just keeps things neater that's all! [edit] Exodusters

Hi. You left the following comment on my talk page:

  • "I got interested in the Exodusters because of a friend whose grandmother moved from Memphis to Kansas in the 1920's. She clearly wasn't part of the exoduster movement, but I am curious whether you know of any exodus to Kansas from Memphis occurring in the 20th century? My friend says there were quite a few that went."
  • "Also, I notice that there is another Wikipedia article on the exodus, called the Exodus of 1879, that seems to have somewhat more material. It seems to me that the articles should be merged; I copied the references from your version to the other, which seems pretty harmless, but I didn't like to change the body of either article since I know nothing about the subject. Merger seems to be a good idea, but I'd like to know what you think."

I don't know if I can answer your questions, but I'll try. First, I must admit that I have no expertise on a specific African-American exodus to Kansas during the 1920s. During and after World War I there was a mass exodus of African-Americans out of the South (which obviously would include Memphis) to industrial cities of the North and West. While Kansas would have received some of those migrants, I'm not aware of anyone who has ever done a historical study of migrants to that state during that time.

As far as merging the Exodus of 1879 article with the Exodusters article, that can certainly be opened for debate. I wrote the short Exoduster article first, then about a year later someone else wrote the Exodus of 1879 article. Personally, I think the two should remain separate. The Exodus of 1879 article focuses on the event itself, while the Exodusters article focuses on the people who actually participated in the event. Both could use some expansion and elaboration, but I'll leave that to other editors as I no longer take on very large projects in Wikipedia.

I hope this answers your questions. Best wishes, StudierMalMarburg (talk) 17:28, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
