Dr Ng Eng Hen (simplified Chinese: 黄永宏; pinyin: Huáng Yǒnghóng) (born 10 December 1958) is the Minister of Manpower and Second Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore. He is the Minister for Education from 1 April 2008.[1]
He was also a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the People's Action Party. Dr. Ng is a Member of Parliament for the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency.[2]

[edit] Early life
Dr. Ng was born in Singapore on December 10, 1958. As a child, he attended Anglo-Chinese School and the National Junior College, after which he attended medical school at the National University of Singapore. He did additional fellowship training in surgical oncology in the United States at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Ng was a Consultant Surgeon at Singapore General Hospital from 1992 to 1997, and maintained a private practice in Mount Elizabeth Hospital as a surgical oncologist (cancer surgeon/breast cancer surgeon) from 1997 to 2001.[3]

In 2001, Dr. Ng joined the People's Action Party as a Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. A year later, he was promoted to Minister of State for Education and Manpower. In August 2004, he became the Minister of Manpower and Second Minister for Education. However, less than a year later, his secondary role as Second Minister for Education was switched to Second Minister for Defence.
As a politician, he was also the Chairman of the Jobs Task Force, MOM, and the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Low Wage Workers.
In June 2007, Dr. Ng travelled to France at the invitation of the French Ministry of Defence to visit the Paris Air Show and also to visit a permanent Singaporean air force detachment stationed at Cazaux Air Base in France.[4]

Dr. Ng is married to a paediatrician, Ivy Lim Swee Lian. He has four children, all born between 1984 and 1994.
During his spare time, he enjoys jogging, reading and playing golf.
