The NFC Institute of Engineering and Technological Training is the training center of the National Fertilizer Corporation of Pakistan. It is a small engineering university serving mainly the province of Southern Punjab.[1] In order to meet the requirement of trained manpower for chemical process industry, especially in the fertilizer sector, a Training Centre was established in 1985 with the technical assistance of M/s. COSMO International Co., Ltd., Japan. The Centre trains managers, engineers, supervisors, operators, and technicians through programs that vary widely in content. It is very small, with classes of 45 students, and is intended mainly to serve only one region of Pakistan

[edit] Operation

To further diversify the activities of the Centre and in line with the education policy announced by the Government of Pakistan, the NFC, with the approval of the Ministry of Industries and Production of the Government of Pakistan, upgraded the Centre in 1994. It started to graduate engineering classes initially in Chemical Engineering discipline, and changed its name to the “NFC Institute of Engineering & Technological training”.[citation needed] The program sought to address the need of the country, but particularly of this area.

The first class of 45 students was admitted to the B.Sc. (Engineering) Chemical Engineering First Professional class for the 1993-97 session in April, 1994, and passed out in 1998, exactly after four years after their admission. The classes were admitted each following year with this four-year session length. The program aimed to place graduates in the Chemical and Processing industry of Pakistan.[2]

Students from various areas in Pakistan have undergone studies for the pursuit of the Bachelor’s degree program in Chemical Engineering at the Institute.

In May 2008, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani granted university status to Institute of Engineering and Technology Training, Multan, and Institute of Engineering and Fertilizer Research, Faisalabad. This included a 2 billion Pakistani rupee grant to upgrade the two institutes, and a 1 billion Rs grant to the NFC Institute of Engineering and Technological Training.[3]

[edit] Affiliations

The degree programmes at NFC IET are affiliated with the Bahauddin Zakariya University in Multan. Pakistan's Engineering Council, the main body regulating Engineering education in the country, recognized the “NFC Institute of Engineering & Technological Training", Multan, on the basis of its facilities and standards of Engineering Education.

The NFC Institute is located in close proximity to Pakarab Fertilizers Ltd., which is one of the biggest chemical process complexes in the country, and provides a strong technical backup to the Institute.[citation needed] Practical engineering education facilities are located the Institute, such as Distributed Control System (DCS), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Miniature Plant. These aim to aid students in learning actual plant operation, process control, and plant optimization. These facilities claim to be among the best of the engineering institutions or universities of Pakistan.

The Mid-Country Oil Refinery is a newly established petrochemical complex by PARCO and is the biggest employer of IET graduates. The refinery is about 60 kilometers from Multan and provides opportunity for Internships, student training, industrial tours and also offered learning and technical collaboration for the IET students.
