[edit] Basic information

A mole in the government, who is responsible for Takashi's kidnapping.

[edit] Role in the story

Mr. Nezu, a member of the Japanese parliament as well as the Supreme Executive Council, is really a mole inside the government who leads a terrorist resistance against Japan's stubborn and corrupt regime. While he helps Ryu and Kei undermine the government and carry out terrorist attacks in Neo-Tokyo, as a Council member, he also works to crush it. The truth is, Mr. Nezu is as corrupt as the politicians he's made himself out to be fighting, and is in fact using the resistance as a way to destabilize the government and seize power for himself.

[edit] Nezu in the manga

In the manga version of Akira, Nezu heads the resistance with the help of Lady Miyako, a priestess and former psychic test subject. After Kaneda, Kei, and her aunt Chiyoko bring a revived Akira to Nezu's private yacht, Nezu decides to kidnap Akira and use the powerful child psychic as a weapon against the government. He leaves his boat with Akira via helicopter, after giving orders to his men to kill Kaneda, Kei, and Chiyoko. They escape, however, and crash the boat into a Neo-Tokyo bridge the night Colonel Shikishima mounts a coup and takes over the Japanese government. They find their way to Nezu's mansion and kidnap Akira, and soon the Colonel's soldiers, Nezu's private army, and three of Lady Miyako's psychic disciples search for the boy. Akira is soon taken from Kaneda, Kei, and Chiyoko by Sakaki, one of Miyako's said followers. Sakaki hides Akira in a dumpster, but he's later found by Ryu. Ryu is running with Akira in an alley when they run into Nezu. Nezu attempts to kill Ryu to get Akira, but Ryu shoots Nezu instead. Nezu crawls away, wounded. When Akira is taken back into military custody by Colonel Shikishima and is reunited with the Esper children - Takashi, Masaru, and Kiyoko - Nezu tries to shoot Akira rather than letting the Colonel have him. Unfortunately, he misses and kills Takashi. The Colonel then orders his men to shoot and kill Nezu, and they do so. But the trauma from Takashi's death causes Akira to unleash his powers and to level Neo-Tokyo.

[edit] Nezu in the anime

Nezu's exploits are different in the film version of Akira. He leads the resistance against the government and is a member of the Supreme Executive Council. He purposely leaks information about Akira's existence, which results in the formation of an end-times cult run by Lady Miyako called the Akira World Renewal Movement. After he and the other Council members refuse to listen to Colonel Shikishima's warnings regarding the imminent demise of Neo-Tokyo, the Colonel mounts a coup and has all Council members arrested. Nezu is still at his home when he hears the news, and he soon kills his staff and attempts to flee with a briefcase full of money and stock papers. Ryu comes into his office bleeding, telling them that their assigned mission to rescue Tetsuo Shima has failed and he lost Kei and his best men. An angry Nezu then shoots Ryu. Nezu is next seen stumbling through an alley followed by Ryu, and an exhausted Nezu soon has a heart attack and dies. Ryu soon dies also from the gun wounds.
