Next is the fifth studio album by alternative metal band Sevendust a little over exactly 2 years from the release of Seasons.
Many fans say that this album is a return to form for the band. Some fans actually consider it their best album, while others have mixed feelings about, claiming that while it's a good album, it has an uneven pace.
This is the first album by Sevendust with guitarist Sonny Mayo, who replaced Clint Lowery after he left in December of 2004. This is also the first album by the band not on TVT Records and only album on Winedark Records. The band was able to make its own imprint, 7Bros. Records, which, along with the band, gained freedom from Winedark Records in April of 2006.
The album was self-produced and made while the band was on no record label, hence they had to use their own money to fund the album.
Despite mostly positive reviews and a completely sold out headlining tour, the album failed to sell as well as its predecessors, which all were certified Gold. This was mainly due to the lack of good promotion for the album by the record label, as there were many fans who didn't even know Sevendust had new music out at the time.
The first song released from the album was "Pieces." The first official single, however, was "Ugly," which had a fair amount of radio play and a video for the song, which depicted the band in a dark alley and civilians being lured into a laboratory where they get their eyes taken out. "Failure" was released as the second single, but didn't have a music video. "Pieces" was then released as the third official single, and had a video featuring concert footage from current tours. Also, an unnofficial video for "Hero" was released showing footage of Bruce Lee in many of his famous film roles.
