NextBus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NextBus is a vehicle tracking system provided by NextBus, Inc., for buses, trams, light rail operations and other public transportation vehicles.
[edit] Overview
Each vehicle is fitted with a GPS receiver, which transmits speed and location data. The GPS data, along with configuration information and historic travel time data, is used to generate projected arrival/departure times. These times are available via the NextBus website and electronic signs at bus stops and tram stops. They are also delivered to cell phones, PDAs and other wireless devices via the Internet. NextBus Inc. states that this increases user satisfaction by increasing the amount of information that reaches them. NextBus Inc. also provides management tools for transit agencies.
[edit] Usage
NextBus is used for the entire San Francisco Municipal Railway system. AC Transit, which services the East Bay region of the San Francisco area, uses it to provide arrival data for 35 routes, including its rapid bus lines in Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond. The Emery Go Round shuttle in nearby Emeryville has also implemented the technology. The city of Guelph also uses it. The system is used by approximately 45 transit agencies in the United States and Canada.
