[edit] List of New Zealand-related topics

Needs a fair bit of work in many places. In theory should be a good overview page pointing to the most important articles about New Zealand.

[edit] Air New Zealand Flight 901

Nominated on 4 May 2006, needs 2 votes by 18 May 2006

(Mt Erebus disaster) - Clearly not a stub but I was surprised by how little there was on this. Its not exactly a sraightforward subject but one that is clearly deserving of better coverage. There is little discussion of the most probable reason for the crash (i.e. the coordinates being set without the crew being notified). Currently Mt Erebus disaster redirects to this but I would suggest that we re-name it Mt Erebus Disaster and set up a redirect from Air New Zealand Flight 901

[edit] Contiki Tours

This is up for deletion but looks like it will be kept. If it is indeed kept, I believe it is a worthy candidate for a workover. This is a notable company in terms of its impace on New Zealand youth, and deserves some attention.

  • Support. This company has operated in Canada for years. I had no idea it was a Kiwi company until I saw this. Fluit 01:14, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Beware .Beware .Beware. Don't work on this article just yet. For a start, it's a copyvio, a direct verbatim steal from http://www.contiki.com/en-NZ/About.Us/Index.htm Also, that cut and paste is from Contiki Holidays which may be a completetly different company from Contiki Tours . Will need checking. No, apparently it's the parent company. Moriori 02:34, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Comment, Whether we need to start from scratch or not, the "Contiki" conception deserves a decent article. Once we sort out the exact title (perhaps just "Contiki") it shouldn't be that difficult to find information from reliable sources. PageantUpdater 03:35, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Carless days

Nominated 06:10, 8 May 2006 (UTC), needs 2 votes by 22 May 2006

Little bigger than a stub at present, but quite a bit more could clearly be written about it by people in the know (and a picture or two would be good). Most of thge information currently there is sketchy, to say the least, and needs thoroughly expanding.

  • Support as nominator. Grutness...wha? 06:10, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Comment: Is there much information readily available about the subject, preferably online, or in local libraries?-gadfium 06:53, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
googling "Carless days" + Muldoon gives about 200 hits, and any library large enough to have a newspaper archive on microfiche will have something. Grutness...wha? 08:25, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
there are a number of biographies on Muldoon about which should mention something. --Midnighttonight 08:31, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Comment what time period should be covered? Carless days in the 1970s or the history of Carless days (including the proposal of carless days more recently)? If you want to write something about carless days (or proposed carless days) 1995-2006 there are many news articles on the web (I searched Newztext Plus and got 169), but of course its harder to find earlier articles etc. PageantUpdater 08:45, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Currently it deals with the 1970s legislation, but anything relevant about more recent carless days proposals could probably be worked in too... I dunno - what do others think? Grutness...wha? 09:45, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winebox Inquiry

Winston Peters ‘Famous’ investigation; in the 90's. We should have an article on it, and how it caused a major political 'scandal' It went on for a few years.

  2. Support. This was a big topic. A huge topic indeed. And something which is little understood. Having a quality readable article on it would be a fantastic service to the people of NZ. --Midnighttonight 05:41, 23 April 2006 (UTC) Conditional support. Supporting on the condition that some other article is the collab between this one and Peter Ellis. --Midnighttonight 05:48, 29 April 2006 (UTC) (this can now be read as a straight out support --Midnighttonight 23:51, 10 May 2006 (UTC))
  3. Support. I find 280 google hits for "Winebox Inquiry" (with quotes), and 200 of them from NZ pages, so there seems to be plenty of raw material to work from.-gadfium 08:27, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Comment. At Arty Bee Books in Wellington (Manners St, next to the Body Shop) they have a copy of the papers Winston presented to the inquiry for sale if anyone is that dedicated to go out an buy it. --Midnighttonight 09:47, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Comment: After doing Peter Ellis something a little less controversal first would be nice. - SimonLyall 07:10, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
We don't have to do this right away :) lets leave it till next time, (in 3/4 weeks) hows that sound? Brian | (Talk) 09:35, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
As Weta was nominated first, I think we go with that before this. Although, I don't think this will be as controversial as there are less people with strong views on it. It might be good to place something in the criteria about avoiding too many controversial topics, at least until the collaboration gets sizable. --Midnighttonight 01:52, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Actually, what we do in nine days time is promote whichever article currently has the most support votes, with special provisions in case of a tie. If you don't want to see this article as the next collaboration, hold off voting for it until after that. It has enough votes already that it won't disappear.-gadfium 02:05, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Zealand Police sexual misconduct trials

Nominated 25 May 2006, needs 4 votes by 22 June 2006

I'm not too fussed about the exact title, but we need an article on the Louise Nicholas trial which would also cover the new case against the same three men. What we currently have is a small section at New Zealand Police#Historic_sexual_misconduct. It's a problematic subject because there's a minefield of suppression orders on details of both cases. There are earlier cases which the article could cover as well. There's lots of material in newspapers; not sure about other resources available.

  2. Support. No suggestions for the name however. --Midnighttonight 09:19, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Zealand blogosphere

Nominated 27 May 2006, needs 6 votes by 8 July 2006

NZ has a number of blogs, although few would deserve their own article on Wikipedia. But, an over-riding article on NZ is do able. Canadian blogosphere would provide a template. Name wise, well I found Political blogs in Australia and Canadian blogosphere to go by, but I don't really know/care about the name.

[edit] Bay villa

A distinctive piece of New Zealand architecture from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. I haven't been able to find much in the way of good web sources, although this pdf file has some good material in it: [1]. I suspect there will be plenty in the architecture sections of public libraries.

[edit] Papakura

I'm nominating this because it is currently suffering at the hands of one or two rather parochial editors who seem unwilling to accept guidance on what is suitable content for an encyclopedia article. dramatic 08:28, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Nominated 7 August, needs 4 votes by 4 September

  1. implicit support from dramatic
  2. Support. This would be significantly different from previous NZCOTFs because the article doesn't need a lot of new information added to it - although there's always scope for that - but it needs a lot of cleanup and polishing-gadfium 09:52, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Time line of Foreign relations of New Zealand

With the current 'dispute' at Talk:Foreign relations of New Zealand, I suggested creating Time line of Foreign relations of New Zealand. I thought I would place it here, to see what could be made of it (especially as I have limited time until November, so can't do it myself).

Nominated 19 August, needs 4 votes by 16 September

  1. support as nominator. --Midnighttonight Remind me to do my uni work rather than procrastinate on the internet 05:53, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
  2. support. We don't have enough Foreign Relations info in regard to NZ at the moment IMO Mattlore 06:47, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Support, but the suggested title sounds clumsy to me. Timeline is also one word, and foreign doesn't need a capital F. How about Timeline of New Zealand's foreign relations instead? -- Avenue 09:12, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
  1. Comment: This idea was raised when an editor was adding very detailed information to the Foreign relations of New Zealand article which seemed to me and others to be out of keeping with the style of that article. The situation was largely resolved by that editor creating articles on specific bilateral relations between New Zealand and other countries. In my opinion, this time line is no longer needed.-gadfium 01:34, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2006 Progressive Enterprises Lock-out

I think the amount of media coverage this has recieved has made it notable enough for a Wikpedia article.

Nominated 8 September, needs 2 votes by 22 September

  1. Support as nominator Lossenelin 02:38, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
I'll support if the dispute is still underway in two weeks' time. Since this is both a strike and a lockout, it may be appropriate to move it to 2006 Progressive Enterprises dispute-gadfium
Since the dispute is over, I won't support making the article NZCOTF. It could do with someone adding more detail about the settlement, though.- gadfium 08:46, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Agree with you about the title (have moved it) technicly the strike ended on August 28th and it has been a lock out since then, though since the article covers both 'dispte' is appropriate. Lossenelin 00:06, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photo competition

As a change from the usual COTF, I propose a photo/illustration competition. For the period of the two weeks this COTF runs, photos uploaded to either en Wikipedia or the commons, under a suitable licence (either GFDL or CC), and used to illustrate a New Zealand-related article, will be eligible to be declared the NZCOTF photo of the quarter. People uploading such photos will need to declare them on a page to be provided. We can either have a vote to determine the winner, or agree on someone to judge - I would suggest getting someone with considerable photographic experience, but not regularly involved with the New Zealand articles (perhaps we could ask some of the regulars at WP:FPC).
