[edit] Stop with the jail comparisons
This section is largely a series of inflamatory statements. It looks like the rumors are still going strong. I'm going to remove most of them unless there's a good reason to leave the section untouched. Ladlergo 02:36, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- It is fact that one of the Newton Public Schools was designed by a Jail Architect, I believe. Whetther NNHS is that buiilding is rumour, however. NauticaShades(talk) 09:14, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Attempt to make the Newton North High School page useful to Wikipedia readers
The Physical Plan section is atrocious. Please do a basic grammar/spell check, as well as a revampling of the content.
I am starting a Draft Stub Page for the Newton North High School page that anyone can edit to see if we can all make the Newton North High School page more useful to readers. When you like what is in the DraftStub page, you can fold that DraftStub into the Newton North High School page.
Of course, I have only my personal opinions to inform me. So I will need a lot of help from everybody else.
Here are my observations. Google reveals the following items that would be of interest to the reader.
- There is also a Newton South[1]--which may not be as "swift" as Newton North[2]--judging from the comparative states of the two Websites. So whatever suggestions I have for Newton North, I would hope to state in a form that would assist Newton South also to produce eventually a page that is useful to Wikipedia readers.
- This is a chance for two great pictures! 1) Newton North buildings and a 2) Newton North Jersey. Newton North teams! Get out there with your digital cameras and upload good pictures to link into /DraftStub.
- Instead of vague statements like "Newton North is best," I suggest that the Newton North team get the actual statistics. Similarly, instead of merely vaguely stating that the football team is "not good," I suggest that you give in a table the win percentages of the various teams. Also, there needs to be more recent sports accomplishments in addition to what is there--more recent events such as in 2004.
- Feel free to fold the ideas from the /DraftStub page into the Newton North High School page. ---Rednblu 18:41, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Race riots?
"Rumor has it that Newton North is riot-proof, which was tested during race riots between white Newton residents and mainly black METCO (bused) students from Boston (the results are unknown)."
I grew up in Newton, and attended NNHS when the building was fairly new, and I know nothing of any race riots. Maybe I just missed them, but unless someone can back up this statement with some supporting evidence, this sentence should be deleted.
- . The "Bus Shaking Incident" took place in 1987 (the year I graduated). Though I didn't personally witness the attack, it definitely happened. The story I heard was that it was instigated by a local dope dealer, a former (white) NNHS student. The dealer told two of his client/friends (current students - white) he'd been either hassled or mugged by a black boy, possibly a student. The trio recruited some additional white students who then approached a METCO bus in the Lowell Avenue bus bay and began shouting verbal abuse, which escalated into them shaking the bus. I wasn't there to see how it ended, and reference to the incident doesn't bring up much more than this on Google (http://www.ci.newton.ma.us/Library/Bibliographies/Newtoniana/ana20.htm). Anyone else remember anything?
[edit] Famous person #5
I deleted this line from the very end of the article. For one, it was out of place, and for two I can't quite parse it's significance.

[edit] Jews Vs. Italians Annual Eggfight
This unofficial eggfight occurs every fall near halloween. The Jews face the Italians in an exciting and messy competition. During the weeks prior to the fight, many stores in Newton refuse to sell eggs to highschool students. If anybody knows the actual date of the competition (I forget at the moment), post it here on the discussion page so that the article can be updated.
How long has this been going on? I attended NNHS from 98-02 and I don't recall ever hearing anything about this.
I was there 97-01 and never heard of it. I'm guessing this person is making it up. Ladlergo 21:12, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm jewish and at NNHS right now, I haven't heard anything about it... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.245.225.4 (talk • contribs)
There is an egg fight that takes place every year around Halloween, but I've never partaken in it and I'm pretty sure that it's not between simply Jews and Italians. Dauthi 00:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Newton High School - predecessor to Newton North
Should people who graduated from the predecessor to Newton North be listed as alumni? There seems to be little if any information on Newton High School and for all I know it may have been on a different plot of land only to be torn down and built as Newton North elsewhere (mere speculation). CowmanTalk 06:07, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Newton High School was located on the current site of Newton North High School. There was also a technical and vocational high school that merged into the old Newton High School. Tem2 21:31, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
The "new" building was built approximately on the location of the old (1960's) baseball field . Wake 19:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Removal of famous alumni
It appears that famous alumni of both Newton North and Newton South are already listed under Newton, Massachusetts. Because of this I have simply removed listing in both schools with the reasoning being it is a redundant listing, it promotes a non-neutral point of view (IE. a sort of popularity contest between the schools to see who has more 'famous' people. If there is a general consensus and agreement that they should be put back, by all means we can put them back. Talk about it here if you disagree with me, please. CowmanTalk 14:53, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- Personally, I don't think the arguments that putting a list of notable alumni promotes a popularity contest, or even if it does that this makes it NPOV, makes any sense. It's just a few facts (albeit somewhat subjective in terms of who to include), and removing them to the city page only makes it a popularity contest between towns. I think it's worth having under both the city and the schools, since graduating from the school and living for some amount of time in the city are different things. On the other hand, since the list on the Newton page does say if they graduated, it could be held to be redundant. If you leave it off, I think there should be a link to the list on the Newton page. [disclaimer - I graduated from North] KarlM 04:36, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

- I'd prefer that there was a link to the list of people on the Newton page. We can say "lived in Newton and graduated from ______" to simplify matters. (I graduated from North also.) Ladlergo 13:13, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

- The biggest issue I saw with having the list of alumni on the page was that it is listed in two different places. There isn't anything inherently wrong with that I suppose, since it seems people are disagreeing with my about removing the list of alumni. Go ahead and re-add the list if you'd like. I won't have any objections. Thanks for talking about it. Cowman109Talk 15:03, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Theatre Ink
Considering Theatre Ink is probably one of the best high school theatre programs in the country, I think we can do better than this. The section is rather undetailed. NauticaShades(talk) 20:09, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
I disgree. Our Theater program isn't any more special than the other one's out there; the information posted is enough. Lord Oppy 13:25, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Since this statement seems to be casuing continual problems for this article, I though that maybe the community should vote on whether to include it or not. A search on Google reveals nothing on this subject except from Wikipedia. You can vote with an Remove/Keep/Neutral/Abstain.

[edit] Rankings
I don't see anything in the online version of Boston Mag about high school rankings. I don't think this is encyclopedic, it probably changes at least annually. I plan to delete the reference if there's no further discussion. Wake 04:26, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] History
There is no history section, and for a high school that is over 100 year old (when it was Newton Science and Tech) there should be some mention of it in the past. I have a nice picture of NNHS from back in the 20s, but I don't have a section to put it next to, just a shame. My primary source for NNHS history died a few years back, but it didn't die with her, it's still out there. Maybe a student could even do this for some class project, but I don't have access to any information. Just a call for this section. Tdmg 02:19, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
