In 1982 a conglomerate of European Windsurf/Sailboard manufacturers challenged the UK Patent held by Hoyle Schweitzer. It was ruled that a young inventor called Peter Chilvers had first built and sailed such a craft in 1958 in and around Hayling Island, Hampshire, UK. The text included "In 1958 Peter Chilvers of Hayling Island aged 12 ,experimented with plywood, a tent fly sheet, curtain rings and a wooden pole.
