[edit] Merge

I propose this be merged with the 1770-1779 Atlantic hurricane seasons. While I understand its notability for Canadians, the article is rather short and cannot be expanded much. Hurricanehink 22:24, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Agreed, this hurricane did not strike land. It sank a bunch of ships with heavy loss of life. There's not much that can be said about it beyond a few sentences.

I disagree; 4000 deaths is quite notable and the article has decent content. Jdorje 07:11, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

I disagree to, but what does this have to do with canadians? it also hit the americans in virginia. And it's quite a notable hurricane if it killed over 4000 people. instead of merging it with something, it be better if we try to find some crazy weatherman who thinks he found the storm path, sorta like how they did with the "Galveston hurricane" (Thegreatferret36 23:34, 16 March 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Todo

References, better structure. The intro says the hurricane struck newfoundland then the first section talks about North Carolina? Jdorje 07:11, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Incorrect

This source indicates the Independence Hurricane began near Barbados on August 24 and lasted until September 3 near Maryland, while the subsequent storm began on September 5 near the Lesser Antilles and ended on September 12 near Newfoundland. Given that the storm was said to have lasted from the 9th to the 12th, it appears the latter was the Newfoundland Hurricane, meaning the Independence Hurricane should not be included here. Rather than removing it, I'll wait until I get feedback. --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:40, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
