[edit] Photo

  • I travel on Route 394 frequently. I will try to snap a photo or two today (perhaps at a junction with I-86) and we'll get one in the article somewhere. Skudrafan1 (talk) 18:03, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Sweet. When all is said and done, I think the article will be long enough to hold at least three pictures since its description should be fairly long and it has a bit of history (of which I'll leave notes on this page at some point today). --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 19:48, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
OK, I added one photo. Feel free to edit it in any way you feel necessary. I can probably get pictures of pretty much any other stretch of 394 you'd like me to; just let me know what you need and I'll try to get around to it in a timely fashion. :) Skudrafan1 (talk) 04:57, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
That pic looks good. Also, since you asked (:P), here's a couple of other ideas that I think would be good:
  • Chautauqua Lake, something like Image:NY 292 near Whaley Lake.jpg, but with the lake on the left side and the road on the right (looking eastbound) to correspond with the route description.
  • Downtown Jamestown, especially in the area where NY 394 splits into a one-way pair.
  • Mayville - a pic showing the NY 394/430 intersection with Chautauqua Lake in the background would be great.
Sorry if I get too specific with these ideas, but I feel that these shots would add a great deal of depth to the article. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 05:18, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do. The downtown Jamestown one will be the easiest for me, since I work just a few blocks away from the one-ways (Fifth and Sixth streets). Skudrafan1 (talk) 06:30, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
In downtown Jamestown, NY 394 splits into two one-way roads: West 394 runs as Sixth Street while East 394 moves south one block and runs as Fifth Street.

Here is a photo of 394 splitting onto two one-way street in Jamestown. Feel free to drop it into the appropriate spot in the article, if you want, when the time comes. :) Skudrafan1 (talk) 18:06, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] French Portage Road merge

The French Portage Road was the predecessor to the Liberty Highway from Lake Erie to Mayville, the Liberty Highway was the predecessor to NY 17, and NY 17 was the predecessor to NY 394. Thus, I see no reason not to incorporate the contents of the French Portage Road article into NY 394's history.

  • Support merge as nom. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 05:16, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Support. I think this would be a pretty neat addition to the history section of the NY 394 article, much more useful here than at its own entry. Skudrafan1 (talk) 17:36, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The French Portage Road and Route 394 are NOT the same thing, and to merge them would be misleading. It would be useful to note in the Route 394 article that a short part of it runs in roughly the same path as the old French Portage Road, but the two are distinct and should have separate articles. "Roughly" is important: the French Portage Road actually crosses Route 394 only once; in between Westfield and Mayville the old road actually ran a few hundred yards east of Route 394. In Westfield, the French Portage Road branched off west, crossed Chautauqua Creek, and ended about 1/4 mile west of the present Route 394 on the western side of Chautauqua Creek. The French Portage Road was just a trail hacked through the woods, not even close to resembling modern ideas of a road. Yes, the two were paths of transport between Westfield and Mayville, but that's about the only similarity. Different starting points. Different ending points. Different course in between. Separate articles are justified.Oceangod8 (talk) 03:18, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
    • Well, you just proved my point - it was the first thing resembling a transportation route between Mayville and Lake Erie. Sure, it may be worthy of its own article, but not if all that can be written about it is what's there now. Also, the road may not deal directly with the roadbed of NY 394 but it does deal with its corridor. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 07:26, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
      • That's worth a mention in the Route 394 article, but doesn't suggest a merger. The original article is still a stub; I'm working on putting more of the history together, and it is a history separate and distinct from an article about a road. Are you suggesting that every single article about an Indian trail should be merged with the article about the road that now follows roughly in its path? That's the logical conclusion from your position here. Oceangod8 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 10:38, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GA review

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
Mayville–Jamestown and other dashes used to imply a connection should use an en-dash, per WP:MOS. "In tact" is one word. Somethings are linked more than once (NY 17, 1930 renumbering)
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
Is NY 953A called something else, if it's unsigned?
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.

Nice job! Let me know when all the fixes are in. —Rob (talk) 22:43, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't see any instances of items being linked more than once per section on first glance. – TMF 22:57, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, on further review, multiple links to a single term are acceptable in each subsection. So it's just NY 17 in the second paragraph... —Rob (talk) 23:01, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
In the lead? Yeah, I took care of that right after I posted here. =) – TMF 23:05, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
"In tact" has been changed and en dashes have been added to two "connections" that I found on the page. – TMF 23:11, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

I believe all of the issues presented above have been addressed. – TMF 23:58, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Looks good. —Rob (talk) 15:32, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
