Talk:New Ireland Province
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
how did it get its name?
[edit] Naming
New Ireland was initially thought by European explorers to be part of New Britain.
In 1767 Philip Carteret found that it was separate, and named it "Nova Hibernia" (Latin for New Ireland). The first colonial administration was German, under which the island was given the name "Neu-Mecklenburg"; when Australia took control during WW1 it was renamed "New Ireland".
