Newton and Ridley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newton and Ridley is a fictional British brewery. It is based in Manchester at the Stag Brewery (a Stag's head is the firm's logo) and owns several pubs in the Greater Manchester area. (It was mentioned in July 2006 that the furtherst afield from Manchester the brewery has a pub is Derbyshire). The Rovers Return, in Coronation Street, Weatherfield (a fictional suburb to the south west of Manchester) has been a free house since 1996, but still continues to stock Newton and Ridleys ales, although they now have a run for their money since the then landlord, Jack Duckworth started supplying Nuttall's Ales, their most popular drink being Nuttall's Pledge Buster (a bitter). Nuttalls's brewery is part of the outdoor set of Coronation St, standing on Victoria Street behind the taxi firm Street Cars.
Other fictional breweries in the United Kingdom include Luxford and Copley, who supply The Queen Victoria in EastEnders with Churchill's Bitter and Thames Lager, and Ephraim Monk who supply The Woolpack in Emmerdale with their real ales.
These firms were created in the 1960's, 70's and 80's at a time when advertising genuine brands in drama programmes was forbidden. Now that this ruling has been relaxed, real-life alcohol is seen to be available.
