Newton Auxiliary Police

The Newton Auxiliary Police is a completely volunteer group consisting of 40 members in Newton, Massachusetts, USA. All Auxiliary Officers must be over 18 years of age and are subject to a thorough background check during the application process.

[edit] Original intent vs. today
The Newton Auxiliary Police Force was first started in the 1960s as part of the Civil Defence Act. To this day, the Auxiliary Police Department still remains true to its original intent. Auxiliary officers can regularly been seen working crowd and traffic control at special events, and also during natural disasters and other inclement weather. Additionally the Auxiliary Police patrol the city in marked cruisers to assist the full-time police officers and as extra "eyes and ears."

The department command staff is comprised of a Deputy Chief, two Captains and a Lieutenant. There are five platoons, each commanded by a Lieutenant and Supervised by a Sergeant. There are between 3-5 Patrolmen and up to 2 Trainees in each platoon at any given time. A full-time Newton Police Captain works with the auxiliary command as a liaison.
