Newsweb Corporation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newsweb Corporation is a publisher of ethnic and alternative newspapers in the United States, based in Chicago, Illinois. The company also owns several radio stations in the Chicago area.

Newsweb was founded in 1971 by Chicago entrepreneur, political activist, and philanthropist Fred Eychaner.

In 2004, the company purchased three suburban Chicago radio stations from the Spanish Broadcasting System: WDEK, WKIE and WRZA. Those stations are now part of a small network of stations known as "Nine-FM".

Also owned by Newsweb Corporation is an Air America affiliate, WCPT-AM 820. Newsweb recently purchased WAIT-AM, which has now moved to 850. Its current format is unknown at this time.

[edit] Television

Newsweb had formerly owned Chicagoland's UPN affiliate, WPWR, until 2003, when they sold the station to Fox Television Stations Group, becoming a duopoly with WFLD, the FOX owned and operated station.

In 2006, they also sold Denver UPN affiliate KTVD (and its Sterling, Colorado satellite, KUPN), to the Gannett Company, who made it part of a duopoly with Gannett's local NBC affiliate, KUSA-TV.

Ironically, both WPWR and KTVD are affiliates of MyNetworkTV.
