[edit] 2007/2008
The start of the 2007-08 season saw the Newry 1st XV get entered into the Ulster Kukri Qualifying (section 3) League. This was a big move for Newry as this would test the team’s skills and nerve against a tougher level of rugby. The club had anticipated this season to be a stiff learning curve for the team, hopeful that the players would learn for the following season, however that wasn't the case as the team fashioned some good results which included a great run in the Gordon West Cup which was finally halted at the quarter final stage by Letterkenny RFC. The opening game of the season saw the team draw 3-3 with Donegal Town RFU. Other results included a 36 - 0 win over Virginia RFU and a 6 - 0 win over Randalstown RFU. In the Gordon West Cup the club where placed into a group along with Virginia, Cavan RFU and Monaghan RFU.
[edit] Tag League
In the summer of 2008 the club announce their first summer tag rugby league to beginn on Friday 13th of June at the clubs local grounds at Telford Park. The league was opened to all players from 16 upwards and teams could be of any gender.
The league was setup so that Teams could enter the league and enjoy the social aspect to Tag rugby along with improving their fitness. Tag rugby is a non contact sport where the player with the ball is tackled or tagged by removing a fabric tag from his or her shorts.
Tag has been taking off in Ireland thanks to a big push from the IRFU to get kids and women more involved with the sport of rugby.
