Newport (Isle of Wight) bus station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newport bus station, on the Isle of Wight is located adjacent to South Street in Newport town centre. Recent redevelopment has seen the old bus station, built in the 1960's pulled down, and the new one relocated just behind, with a new row of shops taking the place of the old site. Newport is used as the hub of Southern Vectis's network of bus routes, so the majority of routes use Newport bus station, currently 13 out of 18. Wightbus also operate a smaller number of services to the bus station. An on-site travel shop is run by Southern Vectis giving information to travellers. On 1 July 2007 the bus station became a no smoking area in its entirety.
Leading to the bus station, Newport town centre has it's own network of bus lanes, to speed up getting into the bus station. One on St James' Street and one on South Street. The temporary bus lane alongside Church Litten has now been resurfaced to allow regular traffic to use it.

[edit] Redevelopment
Redevelopment started from the old bus station from summer 2005. During this time a temporary bus lane was set up alongside Church Litten with bus shelters erected in South Street Car Park. All buses stopped at either stands A,B or C, with the exception of route 1 which had its own bus lane in South Street due to its higher frequency (every 7-8 minutes at the time). It's redevelopment has been pictured.[1] The work was completed in July 2006, when the new bus station was opened.
