[edit] History

Newegg.com was founded in 2001, originally as a subsidiary of ABS Computer Technologies, Inc., a computer systems integrator that has operated from Whittier, California since 1991. Newegg was conceptualized when ABS executives recognized an increasing need to service the "do it yourself" customer. ABS was turning down numerous requests for upgrade components to their existing ABS PCs as an alternative to purchasing a new PC[citation needed]. Key players in Newegg's design and execution were CEO and Founder Fred Chang, and VCOB (Vice Chairman of the Board) Ken Lam. In time, ABS Computers became a subsidiary of Newegg.[2]

In 2005, Newegg.com was named one of the Internet's Top 10 retailers by Internetretailer.com with 2004 sales revenue of just under $1 billion. Newegg.com grew an additional 30% in 2005, bringing sales to approximately $1.3B annually.

Newegg also sponsors technology industry events and computer gaming tournaments for titles including Counter-Strike, Warcraft III and Rome: Total War. Newegg had a monthly Case Mod contest in 2005, where contestants submitted pictures, descriptions, and directions describing how to mod their computers into esoteric appearances and functionalities. The contest is currently on hold.[3]

Newegg is one of the highest rated online retailers on ResellerRatings - 9.86/10 six-month rating (18,770 lifetime reviews)[4] putting it in the top ten stores[5] out of over 13,000 stores, as of January 2008. It is listed as #300 on the Forbes Largest Private Companies list[6], which estimates its annual revenue at $1.5 billion. The company has about 1500 employees.

Newegg charges a 15% restocking fee for returns for a refund, if the received item was not defective. While Newegg grants refunds for defective items, the refund does not include return shipping costs.[7] There is no restocking fee for exchanges (RMAs) of defective items.[8] Newegg does not accept return for refund certain products, presumably because they have been drop-shipped from another vendor.[8]

During April 2007, Newegg launched the community support forum EggXpert.com. The forum is dedicated to helping Newegg customers with technical support. The forum is also key to helping people plan out their custom personal computer builds. The forum has an area where you can report a Newegg.com shopping experience publicly and those having troubles are taken care of by Newegg Staff which consists of moderators, administrators, and customer support specialists. EggXpert also holds elections where fellow members can nominate other members into positions that grant them more power on the forums. Currently, members who are elected into the Uber position by their fellow forum members, receive a $100 gift certificate and those who have been Ubers for a while may be chosen by Newegg staff as moderators and earn another gift certificate worth $200.[citation needed]

Newegg.com is thinking of making a retail store of its products. Plans are going to be announced December 2008.[citation needed]

[edit] Better Business Bureau

Newegg became a member of the Better Business Bureau on January 9, 2001, agreeing to uphold their membership standards, which includes a commitment to act in accordance with ethical business practices and to respond to disputes with a reasonable manner. They are ranked AAA as of January 10, 2008. Their complaint history shows the company gave proper consideration to complaints presented by the Bureau.[9]

[edit] Chief Value

Chief Value is billed as a Newegg Company according to ResellerRatings.[10] It is unclear whether Chief Value is owned by Newegg or ABS, Newegg's former owner.[weasel words] This is supported by the websites' similar prices, layout, and the fact that Chief Value's RMA processing center address matches that of the Newegg location in Whittier, CA.
