[edit] Places of interest
- The banqueting hall of the Desmond Castle, seat of the Earl of Desmond, parts of which date from the 13th century, in the main square is the most notable historical feature of the town.
- About 7 kilometres west of the town is the scenic view point at Barnagh Gap, which provides a good view over west County Limerick and north County Cork.
[edit] Transport
The town was connected to the railway network up until 1973, as part of the "North Kerry" line, from Limerick city to Tralee, via Rathkeale and Listowel. The station house has been restored and survives in private ownership. Newcastle West railway station opened on 1 January 1857, closed for passenger traffic on 4 February 1963, closed for goods traffic on 2 December 1974 and finally closed altogether on 3 November 1975.[1]
[edit] Nightlife
Newcastle West has 3 night clubs including Whispers, Fireworks and the most recent night club, West. A lot of Night Clubs have come and gone in Newcastle West in recent times. West is on the same site as the original Old Turn Pike, which has seen 4 former night clubs, Xanadu's, Coolio's, Coolio's II and the Elbow Room. In 2001 Coolio's was featured in a RTÉ Prime Time Special "Burstin' Boxes, Irish Youth and Sex" in which teens were interviewed entering and leaving the club. One young gentleman claimed to have drank 11 bottles of WKD and numerous apple sourz and was planning to 'finger the box off a flaking beor from Carrig in Dooleys car park' Public outrage followed the show. The young man later got his hole. Whispers is the oldest night club in the town. It has been redeveloped over the years. This redevelopment saw a vast investment in Lights and Sound as well as a new layout. The most recent upgrade in Whispers was the area by the function bar in April 2008. This was to celebrate Whispers 15th Birthday on Friday the 4th of April. Fireworks is the redevelopment of the pub, McStubbers. It is the smallest of the night clubs in the town.
