Newcastle-under-Lyme College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newcastle-under-Lyme College is a further education college in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England. The current principal is Karen Dobson.
Split across two sites, 'Main' and 'Trinity', the College offers a wide variety of academic and vocational courses to learners of all ages and abilities. It is particularly noted for its computing courses and art department.
The college was formed as a tertiary college in 1986 and is now the only one of its kind in Staffordshire. However, curriculum provision has now broadened to such an extent and includes a wide range of community and outreach work, university access programmes and adult education that the term “general further education” college better describes its business.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a North Staffordshire town with a population of 123,100, although the conurbation of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, together with the Staffordshire Moorlands, accounts for a population of more than 500,000 and it is from this wider catchment area that the College draws the majority of its students.
The College is one of three within the conurbation, the others being Stoke-on-Trent College and The City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College. Leek College, in the Staffordshire Moorlands is the fourth North Staffordshire college. All the colleges work very closely and co-operatively together under the banner "North Staffordshire Colleges". The nine Staffordshire colleges together make up the Consortium of Staffordshire Colleges (CSC).
The college has announced plans to build a new college (at an estimated cost of £40m) with an estimated completion date of September 2009.
