[edit] History

Leadership
Until 2004, Felicia Moss was the principal of Newberry High. She left voluntarily. Oak View Middle School's former principal Hershel Lyons, with plenty of experience, has turned the school around. It is now receiving better grades and better FCAT scores are being calculated.

Pam Asbell was the Assistant Principal until the 2005-2006 school year. She left voluntarily to take the principal position at Chiefland High School. Her replacement is Cathy Atria, who started the summer of 2006.

[edit] Extra Curriculars

Band
The band, although struggling over the past years has taken new "Pride" under new director Mr. Cobb. Cobb previously directed Eastside High School's band, known for their boogie. Cobb has hoped to bring that to Newberry and he has. At the Spring 2007 Competition in Tampa, FL the concert band received, for the first time in many, many years, straight Superior ratings. This resulted in Mr. Cobb's head being shaved. Pictures can be seen at the NHS website. The Marching Band's Fall 2007 show was "The Best of Queen", featuring "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "We Will Rock You", and "Bohemian Rhapsody". At the 2007 Marching Performance Assessment, the band received the following scores

Marching & Maneuvering: Superior
Marching General Effect: Excellent
Marching Music Performance #1: Excellent
Marching Music Performance #2: Excellent
Marching Auxiliary: Superior
Marching Percussion: Excellent
Overall: Excellent

More information on the band can be found at the band's official website

Criminal Justice

Directed by Greg Smith, it involves history of law enforcement, self defense, and forensic investigation. The students can get many scholarships. They also help yearly with the Guardian Ad Litum program. Jackie Whitworth was the former director of the program, but Greg Smith replaced her as of the 2007-2008 school year. It is believed that Ms. Whitworth was replaced because the program was not growing.

Panther Spirit Club[obsolete fact]
It was an idea started in 2005 by David James and turned into a very high spirited club. David along with some friends felt that Newberry High did not show off their school spirit enough. Thus began the panther spirit club which has been going strong for the last two years. It's being passed down from senior to senior. David's Legacy continues, even after his death on July 1st of 2007. He will be greatly missed.

[edit] Athletics

The school's sports teams and band use the nickname "Panthers," or "Fighting Panthers." The girl's athletic teams use the name "Lady Panthers."
Football:[update needed]
Newberry's Football Team was once a program that the City of Newberry was very proud of. The program went downhill for years. In 2004-2005 school year, coach Tommy Keeler came to coach the failing football team. Coach Keeler has also brought a very talented staff to go along with the change in attitude that Newberry is experiencing. With Keeler's coaching and the player's getting better especially Antwan Ivey(4), Freddie White(64),and Steven Whitmer(68), in 2006, the team was lead to the State Playoffs in Jacksonville, after a win over P.K Yonge. In 2007 we hope for the Mighty Panthers to make it to the State Championship and win. The team played hard, but lost in the end by a few points. Newberry's football team is "back on the map!". It's 2008 and the Panthers are undefeated at 12-0, winning both the District Title and the Regional Title, and having a host of players being recognized state wide. Newberry has now made it to the state championship game.
Basketball:
Newberry has 4 basketball teams. Boy's JV and Varsity and Girl's JV and Varsity as well. Both teams participate in all district games. In December 2006, the Varsity Boy's team won both, the Santa Fe and Bronson Tournament. That put the team on a roll and also in the local news. The team finished 2007 as district runner up and made an appearance in the FHSAA playoffs. Finished with a record of 19-7 for the year.
Soccer
The Newberry High School soccer team is a very successful sport. Their coach, Rod Warner, is always on task and always ready to help the team in every way possible! In 2006, the girl's varsity soccer team won 2nd place in State Finals. This year (in 2007) the team has had many victories. The soccer team at NHS, will hopefully keep up their great winning streak!
Cheerleading
The NHS Football Cheerleaders cheer at all games, home and away and raise spirit in the "Panther House!" They are the best in the state! NHS Basketball Cheerleaders only cheer at home games! They perform between each quarter of the game and put on a dance for half-time! They raise the spirit for the crowd and also the players! NHS Competition Cheerleaders have had a very good record! In the school year of 2004-2005 the cheerleaders scored 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their competitions. In the 2005-2006, the team scored all 1st places except for one 2nd. In the school year of 2006-2007, the cheerleaders have so far scored all 2nd places! The NHS Cheerleaders are striving to keep up the cheer tradition!
Weightlifting
The Newberry High School Weightlifting team has had many great victories. The girl's team has scored 2nd. The boy's team has done great in the past.
Tennis
The Newberry's Tennis team was 2nd in the district in the 2005-2006 school year. The team beat many bigger schools and went to victories. The coach is Anne Powers.
