New Zealand Geographic Board

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) (Maori:Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) is a board constituted under the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946 which has a responsibility for geographical and hydrographic names within New Zealand and its territorial waters [1]. Although an independent institution, it is responsible to the Minister for Land Information.

This includes naming small urban settlements, localities, mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, harbours and any other natural features and may include researching local Maori names and even the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. The board has named many of the geographical features in the Ross Sea Dependency of Antarctica. However, it doesn't have the authority to alter street names or nation's name.
